Loose Cannon

I think you're overselling how bad we really were in terms of talent.  We were absolutely abysmal the last 10 or 11 games, with some blowout losses, and only two close wins over really bad teams.  Just painful.  But before that, we were consistently close to beating some pretty good teams.  Overtime losses to GTown and Butler, 3, 4 and 6 point road losses @ Xavier, SJU and GTown.  Any of those games could have turned out differently if just one or two shots that had fallen.  I think the string of close losses killed the team mentally, so we went from so-so to terrible.  In the end, our record was more a reflection of the team's mental state than its talent.

Because of that, I don't think Wojo's biggest challenge this season is a lack of talent or even experience - it's instilling a winning atmosphere within the program; a belief that we're going to win the close games to replace the "oh no, not this again" attitude we seemed to have late last season.

If he can do that, I think we have the talent to surprise people.

I think you have to factor in the fatigue that showed up with our short rotation in the last part of the season.  Also Carline's injury contributed to some of these's last season's losses.

We'll play 2 of NC State, LSU, and Arizona State in NYC.

We'll also play 2 of Belmont, IUPUI, South Alabama, and Kennesaw State at home, likely in November before Thanksgiving.

No other officially announced names, though it sounds like Belmont and IUPUI for the home games, and I'd wager LSU for the opener at Barclays.
According to the NC State schedule, Marquette opens with LSU.

Derrick would start over Traci, so I do not think we should take comfort in him not being here. Fischer took ASU by surprise as they had no idea how he was going to play. Now with his shoulder surgery we have no idea at this point how Fischer is going to play. I expect Henry to be an improvement over Juan, but freshmen can be inconsistent. I expect Cohen to start and have a breakout year. Duane should be improved. Fischer had a career game against ASU, so no matter where he his in his recovery period he is not likely to play as we well against ASU.

Maybe ASU was the only game in which Fischer wasn't playing with some level of shoulder discomfort.
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

That makes sense. Guarantees the Simmons/Ellenson matchup while setting up the desired LSU/NC State final.

You think LSU is going to draw better numbers for a basketball tournament final than Marquette would?  During college football season, I don't think that is a good assumption.

I think Ben Simmons would draw numbers no matter who he played for.

I think the general public has no idea who Ben Simmons is.  Its an issue of fanbases motivated to tune in.

Advertising will fix that. #1 freshman in the country playing for a big time high major state school isn't a hard sell. Personally, I hope it's irrelevant after we beat them, but LSU has a better chance of being ranked and is a bigger national name with a bigger freshman star.

Sorry but I don't agree.  LSU has no basketball cache.  In November, no one is going to know who Ben Simmons is.  LSU is more interested in football at that time.  Either way, the ratings are going to be crap for that game no matter who the finalists are.

I'm sorry but no. We lose 2 of the worst starters we've had in a long time and a guy with bad knees.

We didn't lose anyone with "bad knees" or even a bad knee.

I heard Grambling somewhere.  Wonder if they could fill up the Al?

I'll have to go with Sultan over BrewCity here.

Even with low ratings it'll be fun to see Simmons vs Ellenson

Heard the same and don't like it. Seems like they must have the goods on someone highly placed at Marquette.

Better off playing a D3 school than Grambling..they'll kill the RPI.

Grambling's even worse than Alabama A&M, so I'm going to guess that the answer is no.

Try this.  No one cares about this game in November.  But I have relatives who were at the PMAC when LSU played (and nearly beat) Kentucky last year and said the place was packed and rocking.

Which is why I think the best ratings will come from the best rankings. Like it or not, LSU has a better chance of being ranked in late November than we do.

Kentucky at LSU is going to be packed & rocking regardless of the month.
