I'd rather be Gold than what we have now.

I can understand people getting upset with the name change from Warriors to Golden Eagles, but it's here now and not going away. Continue to call MU the Warriors if you'd like (nice secondary name if you ask me) but golden eagles as a whole are pretty badass birds.

If anything I wish we'd go back to the old logo

Same here, I actually thought it wasn't that bad.  Although I don't like the way they were using "THE" in front of Gold.  It should have just been Gold by itself, like Stanford Cardinal, Harvard Crimson, and Syracuse Orange.

Groin_pull

So, we would have been The Gold...yet still had that damn bird as a mascot? Huh?

I am unfamiliar with the conversations at the time, but couldn't Marquette have kept the Warriors nickname and just eliminated any reference and/or imagery related to Native Americans?

A Warrior can mean a lot of different things.  Heck, we could just use an image of D. Wade, Jae or Jimmy Buckets and the message would still get across.

OK, here we go... the annual Eagle bashing by us Warriors.

Before this gets into 15 takes, here's the reality

   1) In a PC World, calling yourself a Warrior doesn't hack it. As stupid as it sounds, the NCAA is the most PC organization on the planet and wiping out Warriors and Native American imagry is less painful than admitting you are enslaving 18-22 year old men and women for commercial benefit.
   2) A furry bird as a mascot is stupid.
   3) We ain't going back.
   4) People who remember us as Warriors are dying or losing interest. The alumni base has passed or is probably very close to the tipping point where there are more folks that know us as Golden Eagles than as Warriors.
   5) Ain't no changing Items 1 to 4, above!

Given these factors, let's bury this one once and for all!

If we would have done that initially in 1994, we would have been fine.  But we didn't, and it's too late now.  Gold was a viable way out, but was handled so poorly that it didn't have a chance.  The only other option was to go back to Hilltoppers, but we didn't do that in 2005, so now we're stuck with the chicken hawk forever.

They should license that slo-mo video for the game intros.
And when we get the new stadium, add that to the floor graphic light show - whatever that's technically called.

My vote will always be Warriors with St. Joan of Arc in armor as a mascot. Possibly a new logo or just use the current MU (although I think that could be made a little cleaner). A new, strong identity that pays homage to the fact we're a Catholic School, the Joan of Arc chapel on campus, and our Warrior athletic past. It would also give us the distinction of being the only major NCAA team (I believe) with a woman as primary mascot. I like how unique it is.

That being said, we're stuck with Golden Eagles and that isn't that bad.

I definitely agree with all that...

..except the "isn't that bad" part.

The JoA symbol with the Warriors name would be very cool.

My bad, I should have searched to make sure there wasn't an inactive thread that dates FROM 2007 before bringing up an idea.

It was not my intent to be snarky. but simply to point out we've been down this path a few times.

I don't have time to find it, but someone on this board went to the trouble of presenting a rather elaborate marketing presentation to Father Wild, using Joan of Arc imagery in support of returning to the Warrior nickname.  It made perfect sense, including the fact that Marquette was the first Jesuit college to accept women.

Agree with everything here. That would have been cool. I don't hate "Golden Eagles," it's just so unoriginal. I'm just glad we dumped the chicken hawk for the block MU. The block MU shows that even the powers that be know the chicken hawk sucked.

Ok, then I hereby retract my snarky response. If someone has this presentation, I'd love to see it.

Edit:  Well, here's the email I got from the guy who did the presentation, I don't have the actual presentation, just this text and some pics (name excluded since I don't know that he'd want me revealing it here).

Hey there,

My brother showed me the current dialog chain on muscoop regarding Joan of Arc as the Warrior icon. This amazed me, because I PRESENTED the MU administration with this exact concept in late summer of 2004, and was politely told "no thanks."

This wasn't some hack presentation, either, Brands are my business (I recently did the Milwaukee Admirals logo and uniform redesign) and it was a professional, bound 20 page study which included multiple concept drawings and several actual logos. I even hired a comic book artist to do some renderings of Joan as a warrior/saint, and I designed a statue to go next to her chapel (see below)

For example, this is an historically accurate version of Joan of Arc's battle shield. This is the actual shield she carried into battle. The elements represent the Crown of Heaven, her sword and two fleur-de-lis, representing the Angels of Justice and Mercy.

Think this feels like a Marquette logo?

Think this represents the soul of the institution better than an eagle?

Think this could put the warrior issue to rest?

Yeah, me too.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Joan of Arc Chapel is on Marquette's campus. Would be a near perfect way of being the Warriors and having a historically referenced mascot.

I am with you on this.  I know for a fact that this idea (along with the logo in your avatar, among other images) was pitched to the MU Board in a very creative way by a respected advertising professional (and MU Grad) at the time the last vote came up and it was pretty much just dismissed--their minds were closed to the possibility of using "Warriors" in any way.

Holy smokes, let's pitch this to them once a month until they realize it's a pretty good idea.

I disagree with this statement. The warrior brand is still alive and very well recognized within the student body.
