At this hour, has Diamond officially signed with Maryland? If not, we still have a chance!!!

Ironically, no.  He won't be signing a NLI, but instead signing grant in aid papers.  More kids should do this.

I didn't know that. Moreover, I don't even know what grant-in-aid papers are. Are they agreeing to accept a regular grant, the kind even non-jocks get from schools?

A few months ago Stephen Zimmerman (Bishop Gorman H.S. in LV) stated he wanted to do this.

The only difference I garnered from the article is that Maryland couldn't block schools if he wanted to transfer. Basically, no Jarrod Uthoff situation. Or if he signed today and Turgeon left tomorrow, he wouldn't have to wait to sign somewhere else. Bob Stone made it out to be a big deal, and while it probably isn't a bad idea, it doesn't seem nearly as consequential as he indicated.

Yes, gives student athlete more flexibility if something were to change.  Now, the flip side is s school can refuse to accept that approach because it is non binding.

It does, but I think it makes a lot more sense for guys that sign early than guys like Stone and Zimmerman that will be signing late. If their coach bails between now and the start of the season, this does let them get out quicker, though teams pretty much always grant releases for committed freshmen from the NLI if there's a coaching change. Maybe you have to wait a few days to meet with the new coach, but rarely do they enforce the NLI to the letter.

If Turgeon or Cal go to the NBA (about the only likely changes at this point of the season) it helps. But there's a lot more likely to change for guys that sign in fall. For future changes, I suppose it makes sense. Who knows what will happen next year, but again, you can always transfer, all this changes is the school's ability to limit you. So in the case of Bo Ryan going mental or Mizzou's craziness with Johnathan Williams, you can at least protect yourself from limitations. In that regard it probably helps more, especially if these guys aren't as good as they think they are (read: not one-and-done).

I heard it was protocol to fax the signed NLI from your local McDonald's.   Or did that change after the last coach left....?

All 4 at the time signed. NN was released from his.

All current 5 have now officially signed with Marquette.

Interesting, thanks.

I wonder why more big stars don't do this. The school certainly isn't going to rescind a scholly for a top-20 recruit, right?

I know I'd want the most flexibility possible if I were a "sure thing" athlete.
