From 1946 to 1981 they played a third place game.  (From 1946 to 1975 they also played a third place game in the regionals as well).

So what do you think about a third place game on, say TBS or TNT, starting 3 hours before the finals (in case of OT).  This year would be Kentucky against Michigan State.

Would you watch it?

I said yes as I thought it would be more interesting as I wait for the late start to this game.

Vote and thoughts.

Nobody wanted to play it. That's why they dropped it. No need for it.

I voted yes. Meaningless or not, it's fun and it gives teams one more reason to go to the Final Four. I would have loved Marquette/Texas in 2003, if only to give us something to look forward to. More often than not, it should be another high level game. Why not?

No, it got dropped because Kansas was embarrassed by UCLA. Wooden did not play any starters and still beat Kansas.

That's easy to fix ... the NCAA will can give different shares for third and fourth place.

No need. Don't put the kids who lost through that.

I would hate to make the Final Four and still be the one team in the tournament that lost two games.  Which might be a reason why you'd expect a good game.  Not the worst thing to be the only team other than the champion to end the season with a win.

ChicosBailBonds

World Cup still plays 3rd place game.  I'm more surprised from an "exploitation" perspective and $$$ they don't do it.  Clearly the NCAA and the evil tv networks are losing out on ways to exploit these kids more.

I don't think I would have been at all interested in a Kentucky-Michigan State game last night.  More importantly, I don't think any of the possible participants in such a game would be interested in playing.

I doubt they dropped it and never brought it back due to one game.

I don't know. I could see Kentucky being pissed off and wanting to prove the loss was a fluke. MSU would love a shot at Kentucky. I could see the coaches hating it since no one cares of 3rd/4th on their resume but adds an unnecessary loss.

In 1972 I was at the third-place game we played after we lost to Kentucky in the regional.  In 1974 I was at the third-place game UCLA had to play after they lost to NC State.  The UCLA players were at the MU parties the night before that game.  There is no point to that game, no one wants to play in it, and it should stay buried.
