Good friend, my best man.  There was a time I was hoping he would become the AD at MU, but he's way beyond that at this point with a football school.

He'll be the AD at a Pac 12 school within 10 years if I had to guess.

Some of you might remember him in the Blue and Gold fund office for several years.

Mack has done an amazing job raising money for facilities, no question about that.

I thought of you when we saw this news in the Chron.
UH went through conference shift, new FB stadium, and upgrading every phase of their program. Mac did a great job, but in doing so, it was only a matter of time and big $$ that a power 5 would scoop him up. Coogs are grateful and wish him well
I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.

I spoke to him today via text.  He was excited, but also a bit sad.  Leaving a lot of people he cares about.  It was 20 years ago we were grad students together.  He's done very well.  Couldn't be happier for him and his family.

Well, as the Houston AD he recently hired Kelvin Sampson as the men's basketball coach - so "a little squirmy" would qualify as an understatement. Given Mizzou's recent history, they'll be on board with that sort of stuff.

My daughter is named after him, he was my best man in my wedding, his wife took care of me after emergency surgery in grad school for over a week, on and on.  Wonderful family.

I have no idea the drivel Lenny wrote, but can only imagine.  Mack's a good dude.  I don't always agree with some of his coaching hires or his taste in NFL teams (he's a Vikings fan), but good man.  The SEC is a land mine of a conference, he's going to have tough challenges to win, do it right, etc.  Many have failed, I hope he can pull it off.

Hilarious. Look, he may be a "good dude", but less than a year ago he hired as head coach college basketball's most infamous cheater of this century. You simply cannot get any more "just win, baby" than that. He's gonna have a tough challenge to "do it right" at frickin' Missouri? Don't make me laugh. He was hired BECAUSE he'll roll will a coach like Kelvin Sampson. By your ultra tight ass standards your boy has proven himself beyond squirmy. If Marquette hired a guy with his recent history you would be apoplectic. Hypocrisy.

weren't Sampson's violations mainly just for sending too many texts which is no longer an infraction?

GGGG

It looks as though he isn't going to have to hire a football coach for awhile.  Pinkel has WAY overperformed at Mizzou considering their current conference affiliation.

Kim Anderson *might* be over his head as a basketball coach however.

Sometimes coaching hires are forced onto AD's and reasons why AD's look to move on.   Lenny is so smart and knows so much about college athletics, I'm sure he knew that.

No. Sampson first got Oklahoma into hot water with 550 illegal phone calls to 17 different recruits. At Indiana he was found guilty of 5 major infractions, excessive phone calls being one of them. He repeatedly lied to investigators and the program was a cesspool - drug abuse, players flunking out, etc.. In November 2008 the NCAA issued a five year "show cause" order on him, essentially banning him from coaching at an NCAA institution until 2014. He was hired by Chico's pal ii April 2014 as the head coach at University of Houston.

National reaction....good to see Aresco lauding praise as well.  Worked with Mike for a number of years and losing Mack from that AAC will be a bit of a sting for them.

New Mizzou AD Rhoades Lauded For Fundraising Capabilities, Consensus Building

Published March 10, 2015

Rhoades helped lead Houston from Conference USA into the AAC
New Missouri AD Mack Rhoades "earned a reputation as a consensus builder during the chaos of a conference realignment" and transformed the Univ. of Houston's athletic facilities the last five years "through fundraising acumen," according to a front-page piece by Tod Palmer of the K.C. STAR. UTEP AD Bob Stull said of Rhoades, "When you look at the up-and-coming guys that are out there, he's probably the primo guy out of all of them." Rhoades "formally will be introduced" at a news conference today. UM System President Tim Wolfe "lauded Rhoades as 'a highly respected national leader.'" UH Associate VP & COO Hunter Yurachek said, "He's got great vision and great passion for college athletics, but I think what makes him a great leader is how much he cares for people." Palmer notes Rhoades "helped lead Houston" from Conference USA into the American Athletic Conference. AAC Commissioner Mike Aresco said, "We had a lot to do, and Mack was instrumental in helping me navigate all of that" (K.C. STAR, 3/10). Palmer also writes under the header, "New Missouri AD Mack Rhoades Brings Reputation As 'Coach's AD'" (K.C. STAR, 3/10). Aresco yesterday said that he sent SEC Commissioner Mike Slive an e-mail, which read, "It's bittersweet for me, but you're getting a great AD." Outgoing MU AD Mike Alden said that he "met with Rhoades on Monday and plans to attend" today's news conference "at Rhoades' request." In St. Louis, Dave Matter notes Alden "gave his successor a strong endorsement, calling him 'one of the best ADs in the country.'" Alden: "He's unbelievably hard working. He's focused. He's a guy who has great speaking ability, great fundraising ability. ... He has an opportunity to take us to even greater heights as we go forward" (ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH, 3/10).

WHAT IT TAKES: In St. Louis, Bernie Miklasz writes college athletics in modern times "is a big business, and if you don't win, and pull in truckloads of money, then you'll get left behind." Rhoades "surely understands this," or he "wouldn't be coming to Mizzou to jump into the competitive SEC jungle." Rhoades "can ask for donations with a fresh voice and a new handshake." He is MU Chancellor R. Bowen Loftin's "personal choice for the gig, and that should be of immense benefit to the new AD." The MU AD position -- "made stronger" by now-Oklahoma AD Joe Castiglione, then Alden -- "is a more attractive job than it used to be." With that "comes the responsibility of fixing the basketball program, enhancing the football program and getting more funds rolling in" (ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH, 3/10). In K.C. Vahe Gregorian writes how well Rhoades will fit at MU "has less to do with any specific tasks or philosophies right now than it does more elemental matters," such as his "accessibility and ability to cultivate relationships with all constituents, from boosters to colleagues to coaches and anyone else who touches the program." This "was always an odd gap in the game of Alden, who is perceived by many as too distant to truly engage" (K.C. STAR, 3/10).

Yep, an "up and comer", no doubt. "Just win, baby" will fit in well at Mizzou. Wonder if he'll "fix the basketball program" by bringing his most recent hire, the highly principled Kelvin Sampson, with him. Don't see any Houston officials referring to him as "squeaky clean", though. LOL

Absolutely.  Had a good time on Facebook yesterday with all of us that used to work with Mack at MU....people that now are at the PGA, NCAA, pro sports, college sports, a former coach on Mike Deane's staff, etc.  A bunch of people who no longer are at MU, but consider themselves to be MUers because of how they are connected to the university.  Of course many people that still work at MU feel the same way.  Once in the fold, always in the fold.

Besides, he's a Vikings fan....like you.  Once a Vikings fan always a Vikings fan...so I hear.

Lenny's just upset because his guy was a train wreck at MU and is gone.  So he wants to equivocate that someone that did something in the past will therefore continue to do it at his next job or three jobs later.  That salvation or retribution aren't possible.

He has the finger on the pulse.....
