I like Carlino, think he is an absolutely wonderful skilled shooter and tough as nails player.  BUT, I think we stand around too much and watch him play, it slows our movement, and grinds down our offense.  IMO

Agreed

Would have loved him in the game down the stretch to shoot free throws.   Of course, MU was turning the ball over enough that SH didn't need to foul that much.

Offense looked more fluid.  Maybe Carlino should be moved off of PG, especially when Derrick is in.

LloydsLegs

Well, I guess I'm trying to figure out how today was that much different. Seemed to. Be the same story other than JJJ driving, sometimes out of control, but mostly with effect.

Blackhat

I think O is better with Carlino but he takes too many defensive possessions off trying to save his legs/shot.

I think Ners might be in the hospital after Wilson picked up his dribble before half court near the end of the game.  Woof.  That was bad.

I thought you were dead. Willie lives rent free in Reekers mind. Rick Pitino: "You can either complain or adapt."

We didn't need him to win. Team played better.

A more disciplined (selective) Carlino and an effort like today could pay dividends. Run the offense, play a team game.  MU has definitely needed Matt's energy this year hope he gets healthy/concussion cleared and back soon.

Could also be the psychology of things.  Your "best" player is out, so everyone feels the need to step up.  Could be a short term bump and not sustaining, but I did like the movement a bit better, and actually now knowing who was going to take the shot was as interesting for me as I'm sure it was complex for the Hall.  The predictability went down.

Exactly.  Maybe when Matt's inserted back into the lineup this performance will help us figure some things out.  But to say we're better without Carlino in is silly.  We were super one-dimensional and lucky that Seton Hall played horribly almost the entire game.

I think we were better today....question is whether it is sustainable.

Maybe we have a different definition of what a PG is, but I think it could be at least looked at.  Move Carlino off the ball and get him off of some screens.  Late in the game, of course, Carlino can be the one bringing the ball up under pressure.

tower912

Derrick was terrible offensively today.   The team shot 1-10 from 3 and wasn't much better on medium range jump shots.   Carlino could have helped with both of those.

Carlino does play off the ball.  If derrick is in there he is running point and Carlino runs off screens, this has been our offense all year.  The only time Carlino plays point is when Derrick is on the bench, and thats about 8-10 minutes a game.

With Matt out, MU's offense was better spaced and set Luke deep in the paint. Why? For the first time all year, Steve and Luke played at the same time. Steve doing what he does best which is face the basket or flashing the free throw line, or setting the high pick with the roll instead of Luke. Luke then could concentrate owning the paint and sealing, drawing fouls. Wojo has been reluctant to play them together because of foul trouble but the reality is there is less foul trouble with both of them in the game together as they can cover to their strengths. Add in that JjJ is the best dribble drive penetrator on the team. Great pre-game adjustment by the coach.

That said, enough with our seniors and coach with the turnovers and holding the time outs at the end of the game. Love their effort but MU needs to go young and play for the future. The brain cramps are getting old.

Seton Hall was awful today.  It was a fluke win. In my opinion it had nothing to do with Carlinos absence.

Going into today, Carlino has 320 points for Marquette.  Derrick Wilson has 350 in his 4 year career.  Carlino has made 70 FTs this year and Derrick Wilson has made 74 for his career.

We need Carlino in.

Well when ya put it that way! Seriously though Wilson is horrible on offense.

IMO it has little to do with Wilson and Carlino....it's about the spacing and other lineup rotations.

MerrittsMustache

Carlino is the team's safety net. Just about everyone defers to him, especially down the stretch. Without him, other players needed to step up and they did. Sure, SH played an awful game but it was hopefully a good learning experience for the young guys.

We get it, Car3no spurned your man crush Tanned Thomas so you've had it out for him ever since. We scored 57 points against a bad defensive team. Car3no had scored over half of that twice by himself in games this season. We didn't play any better today than any game besides Nova and 4 minutes of Seton Hall. The clock just happened to strike 0:00 before our opponents could catch us. SH couldn't have played worse and still had a good look from a top 5 player in the conference to tie it. They shot under 30% from inside the arc. It looked almost as bad as when Tanned Thomas's team came out in an 8-9 matchup and didn't score a 2 point field goal the entire first half against Michigan State in the NCAAs.

I'm giving Chico credit on this one - if he's trolling, pretty even handed way of doing it.

You are off your cracker dude.  You seriously are.   You went there, not me.  I haven't spurned the kid at all.  He's a good player, but he is what he is.  A bit of a chucker and can be a black hole at times.  He's got a quality shot, but unfortunately can lull the rest of the team into a slumber IMO.

You seem obsessed by this cat Tanned Thomas...it is strange.
