Louisville will implement drug testing for members of its spirit teams following the overdose death of a 22-year-old cheerleader.

Members of Louisville spirit teams will undergo the same drug testing as the rest of the university's athletes.
Spirit squad members will be subject to the same drug testing as the rest of Louisville's athletes, a university official said Thursday, according to the Courier-Journal.

Cheerleader Danielle Cogswell died from an overdose of heroin, amphetamines and Xanax, Jefferson County Coroner Dr. Barbara Weakley-Jones told the newspaper.

"The combination was too much for her," Weakley-Jones said.

Cogswell was found July 28 in an off-campus student housing complex, according to the report.

"We have continued to provide support for our spirit team members as they have worked through their grief," Christine Simatacolos, an associate athletic director for student life at Louisville, said in a statement provided to the paper.

The american way.

Just assume everyone is guilty.

When are the University presidents and Professional team owners and corporate execs going to get their drug test?

But with so many for-profit prisons, you can't make money without customers.

Not sure why. Police brutality is not a partisan political issue. It does, however, strike at the core of our civil liberties and mocks the spirit and intent of both the Jeffersonian and Hamiltonian principles upon which this great nation was founded.

We cheer for young men while ignoring the dire plight of others from that same demographic? My eight years of Jesuit education do not allow for the segregation of ethical belief and value based on situation. Fr. Davitt taught me to be better than that.

i would think there would be a liability issue here also.  with all their acrobatics, throwing people in the air, etc.  not a very good scenario when one has a brain full of contraband.

I'm actually a better cheerleader when I'm stoned.

We are required to take a drug test as terms of employment.

Define private business.  One that is on the NASDAQ I wouldn't call private.

Everyone must take one to be hired.  I lost a UCLA intern this year that played ball for the Oakland A's minor leagues because he failed it...too bad, nice kid.

If you get through the hiring one, then it depends what the job is which determines the frequency.

Same for me...Most companies i have been with only test on the way in and if you screw up and need to be fired -- some sort of liability thing.

i hope some day maybe we will all be protected by random testing.

I agree. The corporations should own us 24/7. Maybe we could even put every one that fails the test into prison.

Oops.....  I think they might be too full since we have more people in prison than any other country in the world. But we can always build more.

I need to be protected from everyone and everything.

that's why our streets are so safe and we don't have to lock our doors at night.

I'm just glad we can trust the Chinese and Russian gov'ts, among others, to give us accurate prisoner counts.  I was worried those might be distorted.
