Speaking of Mike Deane, whatever happened to Mike Deane's Dark Glasses? Came in averaging over 50 posts a day and dropped off the board completely? Oh btw, I toss Deane. I think O'Neil would be fun to bs with after a couple...think he probably really unwinds and gives some pretty funny sound bites   ;D

Last post was May 11, last active May 12.  Kinda strange that someone would be that addicted to scoop and just drop off.  Maybe he just has a rocking social life when the school year isn't going on.

Was Deane really more of a lush than KO?

I think I'd drink it all and throw myself to the sharks.

KO binged at everything - drinking, running, whatever. Mike was more of a maintenance drinker - could (and often would) drink beer all night, but I never saw him hit the hard stuff. They were both interesting guys. It's been my good fortune to spend time with every MU coach other than Dukiet and Wojo from Al on. Enjoyed them all except TC.

I will never forget how arrogantly O'Neill left MU for Tennessee with his this program "is not Duke, not North Carolina" b.s.  He always was condescending towards fans who actually wanted us to beat UW more than any other opponent.  And he was at MU when we were newby's to conference play.  We were in the MCC and Great Midwest for gosh sake, of course UW was the most emotional game on the schedule back then.  Then his other infamous remark about puking if he sees Bo Ellis cutting the net down one more time on film.

I think he still is pretty arrogant, but it's such sweet irony that MU not only put him on the coaching map, but far and away where his greatest success was in coaching.  He pretty much stunk everywhere else.

Thanks God Cords pulled the plug on Mike Deane before he brought a seatbelt to his bench chair.  Man, our program would have never lived that embarrassment down.

HutchwasClutch

Anyone remember O'Neill would take live calls on the WISN post-game show?!?  I always tuned in to see how p*ssed off someone's question would get him.

Could you elaborate more?  I was 3 so I wouldn't know and nobody ever really explained the situation around him leaving.  Obviously it made some sense to go to the SEC due to our conference at the time but could you be more specific about his remarks?

He didn't think MU was a big time program, and pretty much mocked fans who did in his parting remarks as he left Milwaukee for Knoxville.  Pretty much simple as that.  That was pre Al McGuire Center, they were still practicing in the ancient Old Gym, so I think he just saw decrepid old facilities among other things, and was dying to leave town.  And he struck while the iron was hot, he had just taken MU to their deepest NCAA run since 1977.  He was a hot name, and was gone I think within about 1-2 days after they lost to Duke, ironically, in Knoxville TN.

That was before Conference USA was put together too.  The Great Midwest Conference was OK, but small, and wasn't going anywhere.  So circa 1994, he may not have been completely off base in his assessment of the program, but it was his condescending attitude.  That and he never embraced the MU tradition.  He paid lip service to it, and that was it.  And he came off as begrudgingly giving it lip service even.

Obviously you throw both off.  Do you know how long a three hour your can take?  And I've only got two cases to work with?

Interesting, really funny change when you hear him as a television commentator on the games now.  It's almost like he's trying to suck up to us now.  I guess there's some stuff you can't learn by just analyzing the numbers or memorizing records from years and a person's attitude is one of them.

I would take KO for hours. Who can ever forget the youtube video in a bar with a drunk KO with the wife and an Arizona fan. Youtube pulled the video years ago.

Then again, he was the guy who recruited Hutch...
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

Quote from: muguru
No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

Absolutely, and I respect what he accomplished at MU, he just acted like an a-hole sometimes during and especially immediately following his move from MU.  Deane lived off of his recruiting through the 1997 season.  Then the well dried up when Deane had to play with his own recruits.  Wardle was the only high level recruit he brought in and some just didn't belong at all in the high D-1 level.

good point ... KO left a number of fine departing gifts in Hutch, Pieper, Faisal and Crawford (among others)

KO was a unique guy and I liked him a great deal. No doubt his calls after the games were priceless.

I got to spend some time with Kevin when he was at Northwestern and found him to be a fun guy to talk to.

And I appreciate the way he helped our program after the Dukiet disaster.

But Marquette was never, ever, ever going to be more than a pit stop for him.
