Marquette oulasts IUPUI in season opener

The Marquette Golden Eagles topped the IUPUI Jaguars 76-68 tonight at the Bradley Center in the season opener for both clubs. Jerel McNeal led MU with 20 points and six rebounds.

MU led 39-31 at the half, but IUPUI stormed to a lead early in the second half on the strength of a shocking 17-2 run. Marquette regained its footing thanks to McNeal's aggressive play and a smothering backcourt rotation to gut out a close victory. Late in the game MU had several chances to put distance between themselves and the Jaguars, but a series of silly fouls and turnovers kept this one close to the bitter end.

George Hill led IUPUI with 19 points.

Here's the SportingNews box score.

No. 11/12 Marquette Outlasts IUPUI 76-68 In Season Opener

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Jerel McNeal scored 20 points to lead No. 11 Marquette to a 76-68 victory over IUPUI on Saturday night in the season opener for both teams.

Marquette trailed 48-43 with 13 minutes left after IUPUI used a 17-2 run to erase a 10-point lead for the Golden Eagles shortly after halftime.

Marquette responded with a 23-8 run over the next 9 minutes to seal the victory.

IUPUI trailed by one with 8 minutes left, but Wesley Matthews hit a 3-pointer and the Jaguars got no closer than four the rest of the way.

Dominic James added 12 points for Marquette, and Lazar Hayward had 11. Marquette shot 55.1 percent (27-for-49) from the field, including 60 percent in the first half.

George Hill led IUPUI with 19 points and Gary Patterson added 15. Billy Pettiford had 14 points, eight assists, and seven rebounds.

Marquette trailed early but led 39-31 at halftime.

A basket by James made it 41-31 before IUPUI went on its run. Hill scored seven points during the spurt, but picked up his fourth foul with 15 minutes left and fouled out in the closing seconds.

Marquette made 8-of-9 free throws in the final 22 seconds to seal it.

Glad to see we made 8 of 9 free throws near the end of the game.

How does a guy like Hill play for IUPUI?  Grades?

Grades may have played a factor. But sometimes guys just fall through the cracks and go unnoticed by the big programs.
