I forget where the article is but I remember reading that we offered him a spot as a preferred walk on. Same thing as what the vadgers offered

preferred walk on.

Here is your seat on the bench. Or, if you prefer, you may sit over here.

He was offered scholarships by D1 schools too.

What is the difference between a walk on and preferred walk on? Just that they don't have to try out every year?

Freeport Warrior

Seen him play a handful of times in high school and for WI Swing. Good high school player. Saw him last summer against Lachance, Timmer and Ellingson and he didn't look to be in the same class. Maybe his time at St. John's paid off.

From about.com....

'A "recruited walk-on" is a player that is recruited for a spot on a given team, but not offered a scholarship. This might happen if the team in question is out of scholarships, or if the player in question is independently wealthy. Some programs refer to these players as "preferred walk-ons." These players might also have an "off the books" agreement that they'll get a scholarship when one becomes available.'

I was told last summer that TJ didn't enjoy his visit with the team at MU, for various reasons.  We were never in his plans as I understood it.

curious what dad had to say. they make no mention of him in the article like being the son of terrell schlundt, former marquette warrior who was co-captain with glen "doc" rivers, drafted in the 7th round by the dallas mavericks where he was perfect from the field(1 for 1)... sounds like a good kid, but at 6"4", i believe his position(shooting guard) looks a little crowded for the next 4-5 years.  he may do well in bo's system.  i wish him well

Must have been a coaching issue.

Maybe he wanted to pick the AD, hey?

I'm sure Dad is fine.  TJ is a good kid.  I am bummed that I have to root for a Badger (or not hate him?)

No difference per se, though a preferred walk on has a greater chance of earning a scholarship eventually than a "regular" walk on, in my experience anyway.

If I remember correctly, Terrell was kind of a last minute addition by Raymonds & Majerus after striking out on several other big-name recruits.

Correct. Schlundt was a nice guy but his signing was a huge red flag that all was not well. That was the beginning of the long winter of our discontent

Nice guy whose career highlight is throwing a huge alley-oop to Doc against Louisville.

Yep. Terrell was our lone newcomer my sophomore year. Even getting Rivers aboard the following year couldn't quell the talent drain that led to 2+ decades of mostly wandering in the wilderness.

Yeah, getting Rivers was an outlier - Majerus was the one who gave him the nickname and he had been attending Rick's camp every year from the time he was 12.

I remember that recruitment. Majerus had taken up residence in Chicago to get Doc. I think we all expected Doc to sign with DePaul so getting him was a huge surprise. The obverse of that was the Downing pursuit.
