I know schools can restrict transfers from certain schools/conferences.  Look what Nevada has done to transfer Cole Huff.  This looks to be the most restrictive transfer I've seen:

"Cole Huff has been given his release from nevada to all schools outside the MWC, WCC, PAC 12, and teams on nevada's schedule"

Didn't UW-Madison do that to a kid a couple of years back...only to be ripped in the press and loosen the restrictions?

Uthoff, he wanted to go to Iowa.

Bo went on Mike & Mike and got into a screaming match with Greenie.  Bo was ripped up one side and down the other.

A week later they let Uthoff transfer to Iowa.

The funny part about that is nobody would have questioned Bo if he just restricted Big Ten teams. It's pretty standard to not allow a player to transfer in conference, but Bo expanded the restriction significantly and even included individual schools that recruited Uthoff out of high school. The backlash was so strong that UW had to just let him go anywhere to save face.

Uthoff never ends up at Iowa if Bo didn't overplay his hand.

But Bo just wanted him to come talk over the decision first before removing the restrictions.

Yeah, huge mistake to go on Mike & Mike and try to rationalize it. He came across as extremely arrogant and condescending to Mike & Mike and basically anyone that took issue with his decisions.

That said, it was really a minor issue that is ancient history at this point. Bo is still a very good coach and he didn't take a big reputation hit. Mike & Mike just had him on again recently and they both fell all over themselves to praise Bo's coaching ability and the UW program.

I wont try to defend Bo here but the bolded part is wrong.  Uthoff transferred to Iowa and was not on scholarship his first year because Iowa and all Big Ten schools were still limited.  They never released him to Big Ten schools but it was pretty obvious all along that Iowa is where he wanted to be.

Just curious, are there any examples where a D1 program has simply said "no" to a player's request to transfer?

Yes

St. Joe's Phil Martelli told Todd O'Brien no, wouldn't grant a release.  There have been others, but that one comes to mind.

Martelli was a total DB with O'Brien.  There is a good article floating around the interwebs if anyone wants to google it.

Lots of articles on it.

I believe K-State said no to a football player last year.  There was also a Michigan player that was told no.  Etc.  Some examples definitely out there.

i don't get it...cal is coaching this weekend too?

bo needed to make the the final four to validate his coaching status, imho...too many years of being too good in the regular season and flopping in the tourney.  still think he's an arrogant prick.

They are all arrogant pricks--even those that proclaim to be humble.  Remember?

IIRC, Bo said no B10 school, no Marquette, no Florida, no ACC schools (B10-ACC challenge and didn't know who they'd play), and no to Iowa State.

I think Florida was on their schedule, but I know Iowa State wasn't.  The I-State restriction was the one that really baffled me.

Thought I remembered when North Texas hired Benford that their AD would never let players transfer and would not allow Creaning/Buzzcutting from the coach, even in the event of a coaching change.
