Can MU put restrictions on where a player goes as a condition of being let out of their NLI?

Does Va. Tech even have any room?  I know they lost one, but so far it sounds like Harris, Shayok, and Pierce all might try to go there.  Not like that's ever been a problem for Brett.

Treating high school kids like that makes me squirmy.

I can't blame them for having a relationship with a guy that they want to play for. Let them go if they want.

Agree. If they want to go play for Brent, it should be fine.

If they're willing to go to Blacksburg, they must really love Brent.

It's tough. I don't want to treat the kids like that, but I also don't want to have paid for Buzz to recruit them somewhere else.

I could probably be convinced otherwise, but I don't think I'd mind a rule where you get out of your NLI with the exception of following the HC to his new gig. That's a pretty minor "punishment" for the student...

Pierce would be crazy to go to VA Tech...at least at MU he'll get to play for a coach that developed big men.  Shayok does not appear salvageable...he gone.  Hill is the focal point.  MU needs him.

If the guy paid millions of dollars is allowed to go, then we shouldn't have restrictions for the kids that are just trying to play ball.

This is a larger argument that I'm pretty passionate about, so I'm going to try and bow out at this point :P

Litehouse

I'm OK with them going anywhere else.  But I have a hard time letting them follow Buzz after MU paid an enormous amount of money in our recruiting budget for him to establish those relationships.

Frequently, it is about the coach and not the school.   IMO, you can't force someone to stay who doesn't want to be here.    Just like you can't force a coach who doesn't want to be here to come from somewhere else.

Maybe if we release Shayok and Pierce immediately, the 2 of them and Harris can take up 3 roster spots for Buzz and block out Hill.

That only comes back to bite you in the future. Cut your losses and wish them good luck.

I think they can.  Harris didn't sign, so he can do as he chooses.  Would not let Hill go without the restrictions - an absurd amount of our recruiting dollars spent taking chartered flights from MKE to Georgia 20 times to pay visits; VT should not get the benefit for nothing while we eat the cost.  Can argue it's unfair to the player, but I think Hill will live.  Should he be released, 30 high majors will call him within a day.

Galway Eagle

Would like to keep Cohen because that continues our reign over top WI prospects.  Hill obviously is a focal point but Cohen, Du Wilson, Burton, Fisher, that gives me a better feeling about someone like Nick Noskowiak staying and someone like Stone or Ellenson committing.
Retire Terry Rand's jersey!

T-Bone

Do the present player's comments weigh on the recruits decisions?  Them saying they're staying seems like a good indicator of what MU's problem was last year.

Yup.  Ask people to name 1 person who went to Marquette and 99% will say Dwyane Wade.  Everything he says about Marquette matters, a lot.  The other 1% will say Chris Farley or Matthews / Butler / Crowder etc.

If your sample is people from this board then those are the likely responses. Chris Farley was great but he was hardly Marquette's most distinguished alumnus from the arts. Pat O'Brien, Spencer Tracy, or Amy Madigan would be far better representatives. Wade may be the most likely response in some populations but the broader world would struggle with that association.

TAMU, Knower of Ball

You can't put restrictions when releasing someone from a NLI. Only if they are under scholarship.

I think we lose 1/4 +Harris

Hope we keep Cohen and Hill. The other two would not be big losses.

Seeing that Fischer transferred in since Pierce signed, let the young man go play elsewhere if that's what he wants. We come out ahead in that trade.

I'm loving the "character revealed" in our players (Warriors!) but not our ex-coach (slippery).

Interesting that Todd Mayo said Buzz Williams leaving was "a change that was needed." Wouldn't divulge further, but that's telling. #mubb

Wow.

Yes, because Todd is a poster boy for doing things the right way. Love the guy - immensely immensely talented - but I might have sat on that one.

Another note, if Pierce wants to go cap his career at VT, who are we to say no?

Think Todd is actually pretty intuitive...has a good feel for things...his comments on Jamil earlier this season about Jamil just needing to worry about going/balling all out, instead of worrying about where everybody should be on the court, etc. - I felt were enlightening, and well thought out.

In the case of Buzz - Todd also said that it may have seemed we didn't like each other, but he's a guy I'll always talk to the rest of my life.  Having said that, making the statement Buzz leaving was "a change that was needed," seems right on - given some of the comments of the existing players today.  Buzz lost a lot of the guys on that team last year.

Better probably for both MU and Buzz that they parted ways now..
