I like the hire.  Welcome to MU, Wojo!

And when do we have to worry about Coach K retiring?   CAN'T WAIT TO GO THROUGH THIS AGAIN IN 5 YEARS!  HOORAY!
Brad Stevens will take the job after Coach K leaves.

Marquette hires Steve Wojciechowski
Updated: April 1, 2014, 10:51 AM ET
By Jeff Goodman | ESPN.com

Marquette has hired Duke associate head coach Steve Wojciechowski, sources told ESPN.com.

Wojciechowski, 37, played at Duke in the late 1990s. He has been on Mike Krzyzewski's staff since 1999, and was elevated to associate head coach in 2008.

He replaces Buzz Williams, who led Marquette to the NCAA tournament in five of his six seasons at the helm.

Williams left last month for Virginia Tech following a 17-15 campaign in which the Golden Eagles failed to make the postseason.

QuoteWell, if it is true, that is a wrap. See you all in 6 years when we go through this again.

Thats all im saying

LOL. Six years ago I typed essentially the same thing about Buzz and was heavily criticized. Guess I'm a prophet after all, hey.

easy Cuonzo. go deal with things in knoxville

If that load of $hit helps you sleep at night, good for you.

In the meantime, time to get behind Wojo.  Hope to retain the key players and recruits.  We should find out shortly.

BallOccasionallyLies

This is a relatively low risk hire for MU. Think of it this way...Wojo took this job to prove himself. Absolutely no guarantee that he will get the Duke job in 6 years now because he is out of his comfort zone. If he does mediocre do you think Duke will really want to hire him? And if he potentially does great at MU does he really seem like the kind of guy to give it away?

Sit back and relax because I think the next couple of years will be fun. However, he needs to get the support of the players and win back recruits ASAP. I think he will be just fine.

slack00

Good grief you guys are whiners.  Unrealistic expectations are part of the reason Buzz left in the first place.

If Wojo does well enough in the next 5 years that he gets the Duke job over Collins, Dawkins, Amaker, Brey, or whoever else that was at some point the next "coach in waiting" in Durham I'm really going to enjoy the next 5 years!

Niv Berkowitz

If this isn't a joke...two things:

1) the hire itself is a fucking joke. Awful. Words can't describe how this sucks.

2) April 1 is a terrible, terrible day. Period.

real chili 83

MikeHunt just posted it on the JS blog.

He got it from Scoop.

brizant

Another assistant (associate coach) here for a handful of years to transfer once ideal position opens - or is he here for the long haul?

CAGASS24

Bottom line; wojo was going to get a job this off season, would have like to get him after a little seasoning but if he's goons get it done and done right, might as well be here-  dude is hooked up with recruiting and team USA bball though

Boone

After this crappy season, it figures we wind up with this non-impact hire. Unbelievably uninspiring and disappointing.

Take a deep breath before you pass out.  Disappointing would have been Wardle.  Yeah, we maybe got rejected by a few (1 of who rejects everyone) but you gotta have confidence we got best coach President, AD and BOT could get.

Silkk the Shaka

I can't stand Duke, and Wojo is one of my least favorite players ever. HOWEVER, I am capable of convincing myself of anything when it comes to MU hoops. Wojo is more credentialed than Buzz or Crean were when they were hired. Dickie V and Bilas will now be our cheerleaders. Maybe he learned a cutthroat thing or two about recruiting from K. As long as we don't start slapping the floor on D, this COULD work out well. As soon as I see two hands hit the hardwood though, I'm done.

NickelDimer

I'm speechless. This is below hiring Wardle even. No argument can be made that Marquette accomplished what they set out to do. This is truly pathetic

I respected the process, and all I got is this stupid shirt.

Mid-major, stepping stone job.  That is the decision that has been made of where we are and where we have chosen to be.  When my friends from ACC schools tell me this I will nod in agreement.  I hope in 5 years when he takes the Duke job we don't hear all the BS about wanting to make an impact hire, interest from top candidates, blah blah blah.

PuertoRicanNightmare

I can't wait for our first "look at what a close group of guys we are" gathering at the free throw line before every foul shot!

This SUCKS!! Immediately makes our team less likable and immediately puts us behind NORTHWESTERN!!! for area recruits.

Other than that, I'm on board.

Mobot

Great hire.  I have always hated Duke but recognize Steve's potential as a head coach/recruiter.

VolFan

Cuonzo isn't looking so bad now, is he?!?

Which coaching candidate wouldn't leave Marquette for the Duke job?

Wonder if Duke will be able to keep all their recruits.
