Let me explain to you the idea of "ghetto kids." I had a pretty good idea of basketball players and their background. My dad has coached for years and have seen all types of players from his tenure. I take great offense to your comments and just because these kids may be black and from the inner city. In no way represents that they are "ghetto." Lets look at our own team. Steve Taylor is from a neighborhood called Englewood in Chicago. Not the best of places to live but you would be hard pressed to call Steve ghetto. I just had a great conversation with him the other day. Another example Deonte Burton is from inner city Milwaukke but he is not ghetto, in fact he is very intellegent. Ignorant comments like this piss me off to no end.

Ghetto kid? Seriously man?

Step down off the soapbox. You know nothing about which you speak.

18 year old Ghetto kids are what have dominated college basketball for the past 50 years. We need a coach that appeals to them and  can coach them. That is reality and I doubt that Lovell understand thats. When the final announcement is made the first thing that will come out of his mouth is that He is comfortable with the choice. He needs to get out of his comfort zone

How do you think you have the slightest clue as to what Lovell is thinking during this hiring process? You are just about the most ignorant poster that I have seen on this board and that is saying a lot. Why don't you just let it play out and then pass judgment.

And since you have so many conclusions about him...who do you think relates to these players you are describing which by the way, I am sure the majority of our kids would take offense to...

Does Chris Columbo need a timeout?

He's close.  CC - tone it down. You're just making yourself (and all of us) look bad.

Hey now... Steve Ghetto was a great basketball coach and contrary to popular belief, it isn't that hard to pick up the phone and reach him.

Wow, I'm very concerned for Benny.  Being able to mimic Myron Medcalf's writing so closely implies an oncoming case of dementia.

To clarify Ghetto from my day and age means black innercity, not necessarily thug. And yes what I want is a coach that appeals to Steven Taylor , Deonte Burton etc.  AND is comfortable in that setting.

Well I think it's safe to say that all of our coaching candidates are comfortable coaching kids that have skin colors that aren't just white, so you're in luck. Next topic.

In no way shape or form does Chris Colombo represent any other poster or representatives from marquette. I'm actually ashamed that he might be a marquette fan. Disgraceful and uneducated poster.

You know a thread is destined for this sort of downward spiral when you click on it and the first post is "this user is currently ignored." Keep up the good work.

Lovell looks to be an good choice for President. He understands what it takes to appeal to the corporate and institutional world and thus will do well building the academic side. However, this basketball coach is his first big decision and a highly public one at that. My years of experience of dealing with corporate types like Lovell is that they go with the no risk, appears good on paper decision. So what that means is that Lovell will base the decision on who HE is comfortable with as opposed to who an 18 year old ghetto kid and their single parent mother is comfortable with.  So unfortunately that means no black or high charisma white coaches will get hired. We need a coach who appeals to urban kids, has an urban sensibility and and can recruit in an  urban setting which is what we are. If a modern day Al McGuire or John Thompson came along, they would not get hired at MU.  Lovell in my mind is our biggest obstacle because the probability is high that he does the wrong thing.

I don't think I have seen a more overtly racist post on scoop, and the sad thing is I think you have no idea that it is racist.

That's what happens when you get old.

If he expects the no-risk hire, why hasn't Howland been signed yet?

Howland's too much of a "high charisma white coach", I guess.
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

Quote from: muguru
No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.
