I am too young to remember dukeit years.

2004-05 were bad but we still made NIT and coming off FF.

Deane years worse?

This years team was unwatchable. No post season play. The nagging feeling that we could have been better if the right players would have played. Coach leaves for what we believe is a lesser job for less money. The SS thing was like eating a sh!t sandwich. And our in-state rival goes to the FF, for the turd on the poop sundae.

Curious to hear what others believe their worst year as an MU fan was.

MattyWarrior

Buzz F'ed it up bad and put us in a lossers position in a lot of ways.

The Sultan of Silly

This year and the combination you spelled out has certainly been a perfect storm nightmare.

GB Warrior

Tonight would have been a great opportunity to announce our underwhelming hire.

Milwarriorkee

Maybe they will wait until after Bucky wins the NC?

Which could very well happen. So glad I don' t live in Wisconsin. Can't imagine how painful that must be these days.

The Dukiet days were like cheering for a D3 program in some respects. O'Neill brought new life to the program, and it has been sustained reasonably well since then. Even Deane was on a different level than Dukiet.

keefe

I would say 2003, 2004 were far more shameful. At least the coach then was actually trying to win.

The coach of last year's team didn't appear to be trying.

Worst season since 04, and capped it off with 4 straight losses.
Thank you Mr. Bozo Williams.
I thought you were dead. Willie lives rent free in Reekers mind. Rick Pitino: "You can either complain or adapt."

Tums Festival

The big difference between the Dukiet years and the early Crean years, as it relates to Becky, is that during Dukiet's time Becky was only average but Bo was in place during Crean's early years. Plus the Vadger fans weren't as bad during their 2000 trip to the Final Four as now. Not sure this year is the worst ever, but the circumstances make it seem like last year's Elite 8 run happened ten years ago.

Buzz Williams' Spillproof Chiclets Cup

Marquette closes season with 4 straight losses, finishes 2 games over .500.
Marquette doesn't earn invite to any postseason tournament.
Marquette's head coach leaves for, let's politely say, a modest program in the middle of nowhere.
Marquette swings and misses on its first choice for a new coach in very public fashion.
My bracket is destroyed.
The reason my bracket is destroyed is because the Badgers are in the Final Four, Dayton made the Elite 8, and all the Big East teams flamed out early.
Anticipating/Dreading the beginning of the Cuonzo Martin/Wardle Kombat era.

I'll admit, I probably don't have the biggest sample size as my first year following the team was my freshman year, which happened to be 2002-03, but yea, this is the worst season I've seen.

Extremely low under Dukiet and hope was nowhere in sight, then again neither was Bucky.

muwarrior69

My freshman year we were 14 and 12; that was '65-'66, Al's second season. So no this was not the worst year ever.

Spent my days at Marquette during the Dukiet years.  Ouch!

... And because Brent did not try makes it one of the worst in my eyes. The players deserve more from a coach.

Buzz left us sometime in January, I'm not sure why he stopped developing the underclassmen. The BC this year was
a downer for me except for 1-2 games, and I really noticed the lack of student interest. He left in less than 5 days, how
hard could he have been trying? I feel bad for the players here and the ones he promised!

tower912

Dukiet years were worse.    DePaul (Strickland?) player actually laughing at MU player (Candelino?) trying to guard him.

Spent my days at Marquette during the Dukiet years.  Ouch!

And you stayed a Marquette basketball fan?  Astounding.

Deane years were tough, as you could see what O'Neill built slowly slip away a bit more each year.  Deane could flat out coach, but I don't think that he even tried to recruit anyone other than drunk women in bars.
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

Quote from: muguru
No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

White Shaq

While I can't speak to the Dukiet teams, my years at Marquette were pretty awful with Mike Deane. I would rather watch this season on repeat than have to watch those teams again.

Why yes, I did.  Win or lose, my Marquette experience would not have been the same without season tickets, pre-game/post-game fun and the cold winter walk to the MECCA and later the Bradley Center.  I first became aware of the university because of their basketball team.  I remember my dad watching a game on TV (sometime in the late 70's/early 80s) and wondering why at a quick glance a school had the same name as my mom (Marguerite) then having to take a closer look at the TV to see it read MARQUETTE.  What's weird I seem to recall Dick Enberg was doing the broadcast of the game.

CTWarrior

This may not be the worst season ever, but this may be the most precipitous drop from the end of one season to the end of the next that I can remember.  Maybe not in terms of wins and losses, but in terms of the program in general.

Absolutely.  Dude was so creepy at the bars.  I remember the first time we saw him at Hegarty's we thought it was cool.  The second time we saw him in there, we turned and left.

MU31

My Freshman year at MU was Rick's last, not horrible, we were disappointed to end up an NIT team, kind of a rough ride there, but wow, things fell off from there very fast.  Everyone knows the stories, but I vividly remember listening to a game on the radio in disbelief as we lost at Evansville, playing home games against Stetson and other teams we had no business playing.  It seemed like we were only playing a couple of relevant games every year, DePaul and ND.  A couple long losing seasons, students couldn't give away their tickets, MUBB became inrrelevant and an afterthought to the student body.  Very large $3 beers were the best thing going at Marquette games.  The opening of the Bradley Center brought back some interest, the KO hiring a couple years later eventually brought us back to national relavance.  Worse season ever? Ha. Not even close.

tower912

I had two years of Majerus, two years of Dukiet.   I was in the student section for the worst season in the last 40.    Not even competitive.    This season was frustrating in the sense that MU came close so many times but just couldn't finish.    Under Dukiet, there was no frustration because there was no hope.

Or on the other hand, if we get to Sweet 16/Elite 8 regularly over the next several years, we make look back at this year as a blessing.
