""If you're first, no one will ever remember," he said. "If you're wrong, no one will ever forget."

MUSF

Yup, pretty easy to scapegoat students as a means to CYA.

Besides, why on earth would any established media outlet run a story this big based on student media sources?

""If you're first, no one will ever remember," he said. "If you're wrong, no one will ever forget."

I don't buy his premise. It was lazy, incompetent reporting that caused the issue. And that is the essence of the problems with social media. Untrained people trying to make a name for themselves by "being first" or "breaking the big story" with the knowledge of steps that need to be taken.

They all need to read All The President's Men to see what kind of confirmations are needed when leaking news.

Someone at MU still with ultimate culpability- it was a LEAK and one that possibly caused the deal to breakdown -

"On Thursday, March 27, the university called a press conference with interim athletic director Bill Cords and the reason for that, said Marquette's Associate Athletic Director/Communications Scott Kuykendall, "was you guys, OK. We've had a good relationship. I've had a lot of requests over the last couple days to talk to Bill. Is he going to be able to answer all the questions you want today? No. Is that frustrating? Yes, I get that. But we wanted to get out in front of you. We had the president (Michael Lovell) yesterday and we wanted to get what we could, and Bill will address what he can. And what he can't, we'll move on. I appreciate everybody being here."

For those that were skewering the Athletic Dept. for holding a presser with nothing to report, it was the safe move from a marketing standpoint.

In a normal environment, it would provide some bland quotes and prevent recognized media outlets from over-speculating. In light of what happened Monday, I don't think anyone was going to over-speculate, but still, it was the safest move and the right call.

How about the possibility SS accepted the job Monday night and woke up Tuesday morning and changed his mind?

muwarrior69

So will the MU school of Journalism ( or is it communications these days) use this as a lesson?

Well there were reports Monday night he met with his team and staff and said he wasn't going anywhere -

What about the 'theory' that he wanted the job and told them he'd be a go - but with his own personal criteria that if they didn't hold up their end of the donkey, as homer would say, and keep it quiet BEFORE he had a chance to meet with his boss and players he would back out -

really starting to think this is what occurred - we are all saying he played us - but I think it was Shaka just trying to put us to the test on whether we could be trusted - and we failed

How about the possibility that Shaka's people were the source of the deliberate leak, and he ultimately turned down the job to burnish his reputation as the most sought after coach in the NCAA?

I buy that as far as those posters on our site saying they were in the know, but not for the local media and their sources

muwarrior97

Does anyone know where you can buy the tinfoil hats in Marq colors?  This whole Brent coaching change and DoneDeal aftermath has been a whipsaw, whirlwind of emotions....

I can't wait for when the squad is back hooping so all this other stuff fades out

Could very well have happened that way. But it was not a "done deal" because no contract had been signed. Someone over at Scout just wanted to be the "hotshot" who broke the story before there was a story.

Just bad reporting.

I'm in this camp for now.

The deal was "done" but SS may have gotten cold feet or the way rumors swirled made him feel uncomfortable, and he nixed the deal.

I haven't heard him otherwise state that he had been contacted and was about to go to MU but decided VCU was the place for him.

When you get out into the business world, you'll find out. No deal is "done" until the papers are signed.

Well, yeah. That is why Smart is a dirtbag. His word is No Good. Do you really think that Cords misunderstood. MU stood on their heads for a person (Smart) with no character. Many good journalists got burned who had sources. Those who didn't have sources can ride their high horses.
