Should have hired Howland three days ago...  Not even a close 2nd vs. him. Including SS.

This was—and continues to be—the ultimate no-brainer. Howland is a winner and should be MU's next coach.

And for those who keep bringing up that SI article...I recently re-read it, and it's more of a slam on today's self-entitled athletes than on Howland. His biggest crime was treating those players like adults and believing they were mature and responsible.

Sadly, though, something tells me that we won't.

Yup... it would just make wayy too much sense.  Why make it easy on ourselves when we can have Wardle?!

I seriously don't get it. Howland says immediately after Bazz leaves that he wants the job. Why did this week even have to happen? We have the money, we need the coach...nah, let's go after the unattainable instead and get completed fucked by everyone in the process.

Hey, c'mon. Jeter, Martin, and Weber are still in the running too. How's that for a collection of premier coaching talent?

I understand aiming high (see what I did there?) but at some point you've gotta realize it's not happening with one candidate and grow a backbone and move on to #2..... Some people may debate whether Howland should even #2 behind SS (I was in camp SS but Ben was a very close 2), but let's get this done!!!

I have said that from day one. Dude was interested and some knuckleheads decided to pursue SS, who has turned down numerous programs. Unbelievable.

Yep.  The SI article is just an excuse for someone who just doesn't want Howland.

No kidding on the no-brainer.  I don't see how the decision makers wouldn't jump on a coach who won 2 BETs and got to 2 Sweet Sixteens in four years at Pitt, and then won 4 PAC-12 titles and got to 3 Final Fours at UCLA...and wants the MU job.

Martin, Wardle and others named don't even come close to that....

This is embarrassing. How few times will there EVER be a coach as qualified as Howland who is available at the time we need a coach. aND he wants to be here.

Make it happen jags.

Need Howland now.  Stop wasting time.  The boosters who don't want him are probably the same dummies whose biggest concern was the "You Suck" chant...which I'd like to deliver to them about now.

sweet.
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

Uh, here's the part that I think undermines your argument;

Nelson often reacted to hard fouls or calls against him in practice by committing violent acts against teammates. He did not deny to SI that he would stalk his targets, even running across the court, away from a play, to hit someone.

Once, Nelson got tangled up with forward James Keefe while going for a rebound. Keefe was playing with a surgically repaired left shoulder, and Nelson pulled down suddenly on Keefe's left arm. That reinjured Keefe's shoulder, and he missed several weeks. Later in the season Nelson hacked walk-on Alex Schrempf, the son of former NBA player Detlef Schrempf, from behind on a breakaway, knocking Schrempf to the ground. The back injury Schrempf suffered sidelined him for months. In another workout Nelson threw an elbow at Lane after the whistle, injuring Lane's ribs.

Walk-on Tyler Trapani was another Nelson victim. After Trapani took a charge that negated a Nelson dunk, Nelson went out of his way to step on Trapani's chest as he lay on the ground. Trapani is John Wooden's great-grandson. (Nelson confirmed all these incidents to SI and expressed his regret, saying, "On all that stuff, I have no trouble admitting that I lost control of my emotions sometimes. I take responsibility for my actions. I'm really just trying to learn from the mistakes I made on all levels.")

After each of the incidents, Howland looked the other way. One team member says he asked Howland after a practice why he wasn't punishing Nelson, to which he said Howland responded, "He's producing."

I like you but please...  He's ten times the coach Buzz ever will be and a huge step up in all aspects.
Shut this board down at the opening tip.  If they win, open it back up.  If they lose, keep it shut it down until the next morning.  - Sultan of Slurpery

I'm hoping Lovell's go big attitude will get us an impact hire such as Howland or similar.  The good thing is he actually cares about sports.  Not sure sports isn't what scared Pilarz off.

Eldon

I also sign my name to this Ben Howland petition.  Pay the man!!

I'm with you something seems not right.  I remember when the SI article first came out and just thought of how sleazy Ben Howland was.  If he becomes the coach I'll support him, but I feel like Cords sees it too thats why he went for Shaka when Ben really wanted the job.

avid1010

it will be interesting to see how the timeline plays out.  i'm thinking we'll have a much better feeling as to whom MU is after based upon who loses, and how long this search takes.  i guess the one i'm most interested in is virginia...if TB wins, and the search continues for another week, it's probably safe to say MU feels like he's coming home.

i can't believe we take martin over howland.  could see archie as a target, but he doesn't seem interested.

Shark

If anything, this whole SI article can be used to make Ben come down in price. I don't think the man is stupid enough to let this happen again.

Also, anyone who played even high school sports, knows that the "Alpha Dog" on the team gets away with everything. That's the nature of sports. It takes the team to get together and hit him back so to speak, that's when it starts to stop.

Howland is aiming high.  Waaaaaay higher, in my opinion, than SS.
