Take all the drama away, who do you want to coach MU next year?

Shaka Smart
Ben Howland

The Process

Let me drink on it first.

I want Shaka but it's so close that if it meant waiting on him to decide and losing Howland in the process... I would take Howland 100 times out of 100.

Eldon

I know Howland isn't the sexy pick.  He also may be missing the cool factor that Shaka has (although playing beer pong is pretty cool with students, IMO).

The guy has proven himself.  Nothing recruits better than success, both on the court and putting guys in the NBA.

I'd be happy with either one.

Is there someone else?  Not asking for a name?

Well let's hope so.  Shaka won't be easy to convince to leave VCU and Howland will be expensive.  No guarantee we get either.  Hopefully there is a backup plan.

Oh, not Jeter or Wardle please!!!

Excellent point. I think I also fall in this camp.

I ended up going with Shaka not because I think he's the better coach but because I think he's going to be the better recruiter.  Kids will be lining up to play for this guy at MU.  That said, i'd be extremely happy with Howland as the coach and as long as he hires a young assistant with Chicago AAU ties there won't be drop in recruiting.

Shaka would probably be the better recruiter at MU and play a more exciting brand of basketball.   But with Howland, I wouldn't be worried about who was going to pry him away from MU.    Almost a coin flip.

FYI--SS isn't gonna be cheap either.

PVMagic

Shaka has turned down a lot of good jobs in the past... anyone else feel like if (I know, big IF) he would come to MU, it would be because he wants to be in a big, basketball focused conference?  If he was just looking to coach here for a few years before moving on, he'd have no reason to leave VCU.  He may leave, eventually (he's probably got 25-30 years of coaching left) but I think we'd have him at least 5, possibly/probably longer... maybe at least as longa s we are expecting Howland to stick around.

GooooMarquette

Howland.  Proven he can win anywhere.

Lighthouse 84

I want Shaka.  But if he says no, does Howland's price stay up or go up further, knowing he's the next choice?

I know.....respect the process.

I would be happy with ether Shaka or Howland.  Anxious to hear the announcement.  Also, happy we will have new assistant coaches.

If you don't know, the Big East is slowly falling into A-10 status. Other than money, there's no reason for Smart to leave VCU. I hope he comes, but doubts it.

The BE has been down-talked and disrespected this whole season. Now with no team making the Sweet 16, it will only add to the negativity. At this rate, we might be happy getting two teams in the big dance, down the line.

The BE isn't what it used to be, and many recognize it. We need to schedule stronger non-conference games, and win them, to get our respect back.
