After the impact hire thread yesterday, I think folks were flying pretty high on your posts.  Anything change from yesterday to today?  We still expecting something by Wed?  Anything else you can share?

Do you buy a car the first time on the lot? Maybe with a Chevy but never with a Lamborghini. Patience.

I really hope that Howland doesn't slip through our fingers (eg lose him to Wake)

I'm hoping that we have him all locked up, but we're waiting.  Why?  Because if we announce Howland on Friday, or even today, then it may look one of two ways (both bad):

1)  MU is desperate, i.e., we jumped on Howland ASAP because we will never be able to get a coach of his caliber again
2)  We informally kicked Buzz out the door (bad because it looks like we booted him after 1 bad season)

To avoid the perception of 1 or 2 (or both), we wait and make it appear as though we are conducting a thorough search.

Hopefully instead of this bullshit we are *actually* conducting a thorough search.

No! But it was love at first sight for my wife and me.

What's more important here?  Patience (says the man refreshing his browser every 5 seconds).

You shouldn't be concerned about Howland and Wake...he very well may take that job but only because we passed on him.

For once MU is the big reigning terrible monster on the job front able to consume anyone it wants.  Maybe a bit hyperbolic  ;D but MU is by far the best job out there right now so we can take a couple of days to get the right fit.  If this drags into next week, could be a little hairier but this week, Howland is only going to Wake if we say no.  MU has the leverage for once, we should use it.

It was for me, too. Not for my wife, though. Not by a long shot. It was the very definition of crash and burn...

This could very well be the case. It's kind of analogous to the public corporate world in that with mergers, acquisitons, or other large-scale changes, boards of directors are expected to go through a deliberate process to before acting to assure shareholders that decisions on such matters are well thought out not rushed at the behest of a few big wigs. A lot of the time, the "red tape" is just waiting, and going through some motions to protect these corproations from shareholder derivative suits. Of course, MU doesn't have to worry about suits, but from a PR standpoint they can garner the approval of their alumni network by giving off the impression of deliberation, and stave off some unwanted criticism.

It wouldn't be all that odd, actually.

I posted in the other thread that Chrystal Ball has one prediction for former Vikings coach Mike Tice

NersEllenson

Just don't see that MU would be holding off on Howland for just public perception issues - as in conducting a thorough search...for the mere appearance of image/perception.

Can't imagine MU would run the risk of potentially losing a coach of Howland's caliber, if it didn't feel it stood a really good chance of landing an equally good/better candidate..
