No inside scoop at the moment, but I am latching onto Marshall and hope we land him.

I'm with you Goose.  As I stated in another thread, this would be the perfect job for him.

Also, that article is a year old.  Things change, see Williams, Buzz.

Goose

My gut tells me we land him. It would be signature hire and one is needed.

Aughnanure

His quotes seem par for any coach in a non-power school, but he's ruthless so he will leave eventually...just don't think it will us.

Rather get Howland quickly than have to wait a week or more just to try for Marshall.
“All men dream; but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds wake in the day to find that it was vanity; but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act out their dreams with open eyes, to make it possible.” - T.E. Lawrence

Goose

Sometimes waiting is best plan of attack. I would wait him out all day long.

Love to get him but I don't see it happening. I agree we need a sold hire but that is easier said than done.

Warrior_2002

I'm all for Marshall as well.  I see chicos article and agree he seems attached, but that's so common.  Some of his recruiting tactics given the flack Buzz got could be an issue (juco), but he probably had to do that more at Wichita than he would at Marquette now that he is pretty established.  Buzz had to go that route because no one knew who he was and when they learned he no longer had to go that route.

1 - Marshall
2 - Howland
3 - long shots and no shots like Bennett (I don't care about his style, he wins), Smart

Really would rather avoid the risk of an "up and coming" assistant.

Howland ain't goin anywhere... he'll still be in the same place next week as he is right now if we don't hire him... unemployed.. this kind of a hire shouldn't be rushed and we should try to contact ALL desired candidates even if there's only a glimmer of hope we land them (i.e. Shaka, Marshall, etc.)

Goose

He would be a great hire but is there mutual interest? Howland is keen. I love the thought of him developing Luke Fischer along the lines of Kevin Love.

The future is bright, my friend. We are better off today than 48 hours ago.

So would this be called the Marshall Plan?

Jay Bee made a great point.  He is unemployed because he wants to be

IMO, we need to jump on him.  I believe Wake and BC are also still looking for coaches (and perhaps still more will after Madness ends)

I am confident MU is being very proactive in their search. I also think Howland is an attractive hire for a number of schools.

I don't doubt they are... I would hope and expect for nothing less.

Marshall is easily option #1 in my mind. As much as I want Wichita St. to win the whole thing, I always root for whatever is in Marquette's best interests so I hope they bow out early giving us to make a strong run at him soon.

If it's not possible, I want Masiello or a young guy like him that has at least a modicum of successful HC experience, recruiting experience as an assistant at a power school, playing experience at a D1 school, and plays an exciting uptempo style. With the player base we have, a guy like that could thrive immediately and gain instant recruiting credibility while maintaining a congruent Marquette "brand."

The more I think about it, a guy like Howland does nothing for me.

Norm

Why would he leave Wichita State after the run he's had the last couple seasons?

Goose

Norm,

I can probably think of a few million reasons off the top of my head.

Marshall makes 1.75M a year right now.

Because it will be hard to duplicate and fans wil expect him to do it again. Butler made it to final four two straignt years, because the core players had an intangible ability to win NCAA games. Stephen's could of stayed at Butler another 30 years and never got back to final four. It might be time for Marshall to move, but I am not sure MU is a program to move to. The one advantage MU has, is that there are not really any big jobs open.

Goose

Does not sound like 2.8 million to me. MU has money to burn on the program.

When you mention Marquette men's basketball head coaching candidates don't forget Kevin O'Neill whom interim AD Bill Cords is considering

Cleanthony Early (their best player) is a senior along with two other starters. He'd walk into a fresh roster here at a higher ceiling program, along with a honeymoon period and an extra ~$1 mil/year in his pocket. Not that far-fetched, hope he sees it that way too.

A higher ceiling?  We just went 17-15.  His team is 35-0, went to a Final Four last year, and a 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament.  Even if WSU isn't as good of a team next year, they will still have a shining record next year and win their conference/be in the NCAA.  Sorry, but a higher ceiling isn't why he would come here.  His ceiling is about as high as it gets.

Blech. No retreads please. O'Neill was pretty much lobbying for the job it seemed with all of his fond reminiscences during broadcasts. And if they're considering him for interim purposes, EVEN WORSE. No flameout retreads, no interim coaches.

Look at it this way. Both Wichita St. and Marquette have openings after the tournament. I'll even assume Wichita St. goes to the final four again this year. You're a coach considering one or the other. Which program has a higher ceiling to you?
