This sounds like us trying to spin the story so it sounds favorable to us.

Kinda like when George Costanza knows the girl is going to dump him so he says "Well im breaking up with YOU"

To be honest,  Va Tech is a perfect fit for Buzz.    Bible Belt, Great place to raise a family, huge house in the country, ACC, fans will  appreciate him unlike some of the clowns on this board, and on the board of trustees.

___________

To be honest it does not matter who "Dumped" who because he is no longer our coach.  Why is not important, only What we do is important.

Shown the door? Perhaps not. Let's say they helped him pack.

I thought you were dead. Willie lives rent free in Reekers mind. Rick Pitino: "You can either complain or adapt."

Having a reduced buyout upon change of AD would not be an unusual clause in a coaching contract.   Wouldn't surprise me if it's been in his contract for 4+ years.

Avenue Commons

Because it seems totally reasonable to you that Buzz will be paid over a million dollars a year LESS and move his family to Virginia for a mediocre program while Marquette was begging him to stay?

Sure. Makes perfect sense.  ::)

You're right. It's a better job and team in all respects. That's why everyone is confused with such an odd choice and departure. Perhaps you should change your name to KenoshaHokie?

When did I say that VT was a better job?

Better Fit and Better Job are not mutually exclusive.

Arrowhead HS is a much better Special ed Job than Racine Park is.  But you know what?   Arrowhead would be a terrible fit for me (Not used to working with high income students).  Racine Park is a great fit for me even though it is not near as good of a job.

MU and Buzz was also a great fit.  To bad that some of you got extremely overcritical over one bad season.   At Va-Tech, he will have almost no pressure from the fans because hoops is an afterthought.   If I was a head coach I would love to work at a Football school with zero b-ball tradition.

Eldon

Kenosha,

Why didn't Wake offer him?  Or, why didn't Buzz actively pursue Wake (maybe he did)?  It's even deeper in the Bible Belt and it's a private school.  At VT, Buzz may have to simmer down on the prayer stuff.  At Wake (or BC), he could pray as loudly as he likes.

For $1.5 million or so less a year? And moving a family of grade school aged kids? Leaving your home? Guys who love their families don't make decisions like that. Especially with that kind of money at issue.

Just stop. Think it through. Buzz was shown the door. Now there's news the buyout went down to only a hundred grand after Larry Williams was moved along. And it's ok. Things happen in life.

When you have a $hit ton of money moving your family aint that hard.
1. You dont need to pack or move your stuff. Someone does that for you
2. No need to worry about selling your house quickly cause money not an issue
3. Your the BMOC so every parent, teacher, soccer mom will want to be friends with your family and wife
4. Families of Coaches are used to moving all the time.

If I could move into a sweet house in Greendale today and uproot my family I would in a heartbeat, but because I bought my house in 2008 and its value dropped like a rock I can not.  If I had not money worries like Buzz than it would not be hard at all.

We look so pathetic trying to say that "We Dumped Buzz" and not "He Dumped Us"
Whatever happened he is no longer our coach and if it makes you feel better that we dumped him than whatever brother.

Well the family thing is the first thing I thought of. After 7 years you put some roots down. Just using my set of values, I wouldn't move my kids unless I was making alot more money or was forced to leave. Everyone is different though.

At the end if the day it does not really matter but....I had a conversation with an Aau coach that is pretty knowledgeable about MU's program and the conversation happened after the field for the NIT was selected and when I told him MU was not in the first thing out of his mouth was Buzz is in trouble, made a reference to things that happened a couple of years ago that just wouldn't go away. That conversation along with the reality of the move in that VT is a step down by most measures would indicate to me that Cords told Buzz that he just got off the phone with the VT AD and said congradulations you are VT's new men's basketball coach.

Agreed. This was something that was brewing over time. I actually wonder if MU told NIT not to invite us to speed up the process. I cannot believe we would get snubbed by them

VT just fired a guy making 800k after two years for a guy making $2.4k.  The pressure on Buzz is now WORSE than MU.  VT expects a return on its investment.  If not, he'll be gone in short order.  At MU he had good will, and way better players.

But if buzz cannot handle the pressure and wants an easier job, then we don't want him.  And if you're right that is what happened, then the administration is correct to show him the door ... Which they did.

Buzz doesn't have so much money that he can just pass on an extra $1.5 a year. The difference between $400,000 a year and $250,000 a year and how you can live is very very substantial. And a lot of people think four hundred grand is a ton of money. Imagine the difference of $1.5 million A YEAR.

As for the kids, it is hugely important. Huge. When your kids are older you'll understand.

You would never make this move UNLESS you had to. You think you would, but you wouldn't. "Fit" isn't that important.

Could this move by him be just because he is a thin skinned, weird dude who got a little stir crazy when the perceived vibe surrounding his job changed?  I mean I know people who changed jobs for somewhere else just because they got to know the problems where they were but didn't have a clue about the problems of where they were going.  You just change one set of problems for another set.   Buzz strikes me as someone who would do that.  We all know he was serious about the SMU job.  Why on earth would he have even considered that if he wasn't stir crazy in his current job?

"FIT" is the most important thing in any job.
I have skills uniquely set for the job I am at now.   Chances are I would fail at a lot of other endeavors because their is no fit.
My type B personality is terribly suited for the business world or anywhere else that attention to small details matters a ton, but uniquely suited for for dealing with troubled young adults that will try to get under my skin any way they can (Making fun of weight, height, clothes I wear).  Someone who has a Type A personality would do great in business but not so well in a situation where too much hubris can get you in trouble.
