Not excited about Howland. The press reports about his tenure at UCLA were not good.

Howland is an upgrade from Buzz??   ::)   Screwing up the UCLA job doesn't afford me much comfort.

You haven't watched much college basketball this decade, huh?

Screwing up the UCLA job? I believe they won PAC 12 last year, and went to Sweet 16 (not looking it up, so if I'm wrong on that forgive me). You don't think they're good this year because of Alford, do you? He didn't screw up anything. They had more success under him, t.han they had in years.

Won PAC-12 regular season, lost in round of 64, albeit without Jordan Adams their best player who broke his foot.

Yes.  Anybody not named John Wooden will be accused of "screwing up" at UCLA.

Three final fours, the guy recruited and coached Russell Westbrook and Kevin Love, can't be lost on recruits
Yeah, not sure where people get off turning their nose at Howland. He's welcome.

GooooMarquette

If we could get Howland, I'd take him in a New York minute.  Big name, great recruiter, solid coach.  The only reason he isn't at UCLA anymore is that his last name isn't Wooden.

Larry and Pilarz set this day up....surprised Buzz didn't give Wild and next AD a shot but gotta roll the dice again.

Stop.  Really, stop.

Do you not believe in any personal accountability?

I feel like Howland would be a huge home run.

Last year their best player was probably Shabazz but yeah Adams was a huge loss.

They also ran into a horrible match up in the gophers. The gophs obviously were not a great team but match up wise with UCLA is was about as perfect a draw as they could have asked for.

I would love to have Howland.

Here's the thing with Ben.  I have worked with him several times as a spokesperson for some of our products.  He's a very good basketball mind, not one that does really well with alumni in my opinion. I don't think he cares for that aspect of the job.  He's somewhat introverted.  The style of basketball he plays is so different than what MU fans have seen the last 15 years, I have a feeling it would be a turnoff for many here.  Emphasizes defense and then defense and then defense.

Just my opinion.  The SI article on UCLA didn't help matters and the whole recruitment of Shabazz was squirmy as hell.

By the way, some of the well connected UCLA fans here believe Ben might be heading to Wake Forest or potentially USF.

Sounds like my kind of coach, like Al.

So no real change from Buzz then, huh?

This is just an initial reaction, but I'm all for the idea of Howland if these rumors are indeed true. Successful everywhere he's been (just because UCLA doesn't think 3 straight Final Fours is good enough doesn't mean it's true), can't remember any black marks on the record, in a position where he's probably not just looking for the next opportunity, etc.

MU definitely could do far worse.

Andy Katz reports via Twitter that Howland is chasing the Marquette job:

Former UCLA coach Ben Howland wants Marquette. He wants back in the Big East. He makes sense to continue similar path of play.

Fine you met him before and had brief conversations. But how do you know he doesn't do well with alumni?

Markusquette

If he likes defense then he definitely will like Derrick!

If true, kind of a no brainier for MU, isn't it?

Desert_warrior

Wasn't Howland at UCLA for ten years? I would think there would be more alumni dealings there than at Marquette. And if he is expressing interest, maybe he got over the reluctance to deal with alumni.

We're not gonna be able to judge this chit for 5-6 years, aina?

I think Howland and Buzz shows what happens, if you bring in the wrong players. You have to recruit players that have talent and are team players. The wrong mix of players, become a disaster. Look at Texas last year vs this year or the previous 12 years. Their coach did not forget how to coach, he just recruited a bad mix of players. Those players are gone and Texas now has made the round of 32.
