They may not be gospel, but plenty of people come to Vegas in $40,000 cars and leave in $300,000 buses. Maybe you can make a living beating them but very few can.

Vegas knows who is hurt and not playing.  The line is not gospel.  It's just trying to get bettors on both sides (teams) in the game so the casinos can collect the 10% vigorish from the losing bets.
