Coach Buzz Williams and the 2013-14 Season Quote

Given that there are four days of idle time until the next game, it might be appropriate to deviate from the all engrossing point guard discussion to raise the question of what was Coach Williams symbolic phrase for this basketball season.

As we all know, each year, Coach Williams has had a different symbolic phrase to set the parameters for his team and the season. In 2012-13 it was all about building a new house. The old one was gone. In 2012-13 the Warriors built a pretty damn nice house.

This year? I may have missed it, but the only quote he has repeated this year has to do with compromise being surrender. After the loss on Saturday, and having no more hair to pull out of my head, I tried to find the quote. It was not hard.

The exact quote is, "All compromise is based on give and take, but there can be no compromise on fundamentals. Any compromise on mere fundamentals is surrender. For it is all give and no take." This is a quote from Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948), and it was made in the context of India's struggle for independence from the British. Gandhi's quote was sort of a "give me liberty, or give me death" statement for freedom in a similar political struggle for democracy and national self-determination.

This leads to my question. What does Coach Williams mean regarding compromise? Is he talking about his values? The tradition/work ethic he has tried to establish and perpetuate at Marquette? Is his audience the team, or outsiders? Just curious to the reasoned opinions of others. (Why do I have this feeling that any discussion will immediately focus on the meaning of advanced statistics, the value of winning tip-offs, Gardner's minutes, etc. )

As a footnote, when talking about life, and inter-personal matters, as opposed to the Brits, Gandhi said, "But all my life through, the very insistence on truth has taught me to appreciate the beauty of compromise."

In one of his radio shows, he referenced that he had tried to cut corners with this team early in the year because of the tough early schedule.    I will be curious what he says when the season is all over.    I get the feeling that he never really got buy in from everybody on the importance of the hard work that has been a trademark of Buzz's team.

This has been my sense all along this year. Couple it with the lack of overall talent, and we've seen the results.

Well, it would appear that Buzz did not want to compromise, "surrender" as he saw it, to the MU administration.
