Check those stats again. Milwaukee has one of the largest college students concentrations per capita in North America.

Back then the Arena capacity was 10,938 for most years and went up to over 11,000 for the years just prior to MU moving to the BC.  That 10,938 # is stuck in my mind forever ( and, looking at an old media guide, that is the correct # ).  When it became the cell, the Arena was "remodeled" and there are now fewer seats.

As a freshman, capacity was 10,746 (I had to look it up). And of course, every game was sold out. My last three years, I can still remember hearing over and over, "tonight's attendance is 10,938." If Marquette could have played in a 19,000+ seat arena during the McGuire era, every game would have been sold out no matter who the opponent was, or what day or time the game was played.

Getting around 15,000 on a regular basis today, with high ticket prices, every game on TV, and a good but not top-10 type team, sounds like a reasonably successful program to me.
