Correct, so 24,000 is more in what MU gets. Which those games let out around 10:00pm.
Wow, I don't even know what your point is anymore.  Perhaps you can explain it.

My point is the Brewers don't draw well during the school year on weeknights and their fan base is much larger than Marquette's is.  Time of game matters a lot to fans with kids who have school the next day.  Not all fans are students or sweatervest wearing emptynesters.  Throughout all sports attendance is higher on weekends and when school is out.  I really don't know how you can argue that game time and TV availability doesn't effects "butts in the seats" attendance.

According to this you are wrong:  http://fs.ncaa.org/Docs/stats/m_basketball_RB/Reports/attendanceYBYtop25.pdf

2012  15,138
2011  15,586
2010  15,617
2009  16,200
2008  16,239

Attendance has gone down every year in Buzz's tenure.

after 15 dates our average attendance is 15,209 ... higher than last year.

You also realize

  • 2008 was the highest average in MU history
  • 2009 was the second highest in MU history
  • 2010 was the third highest in MU history
  • 2011 was the fourth highest in MU history
  • 2012 was the eighth highest in MU history
  • 2013 was the ninth highest in MU history

Article from the Marquette Tribune last week on this issue.
http://marquettewire.org/2014/02/20/tribune/tribune-news/basketball-attendance-dropping-at-marquette-nationwide/

From the article, which I'm sure BenCat12 blames on Buzz too

The decrease in attendance, however, is a national phenomenon. Attendance for Division I men's basketball across the country dropped by nearly half a million over the past four years, according to the NCAA.

A common speculation as to the reason for the drop is an increase in television and online viewership. Ohio State athletics director Gene Smith told USA Today, "People are different now. They cherry-pick. They won't go to every game because you have all these other options to see the games. That's hard. That's what's hurting us."

But television viewership is not the only factor. This is the first year Marquette basketball games were broadcasted on FOX Sports 1, following a deal between the Big East and the broadcast company.

-----------

What is happening to MU attendance since "Buzz took over in 2009" is happening nationwide.  However, MU's decline has been less than average.

You know what sucks? That game is scheduled for the first saturday of spring break for the students. People are going to be traveling/gone.

I can see it now. "The students should never go home or use their break to travel somewhere warm, they should stay in Milwaukee for their only week off for the rest of the year."

It sucks but it's also laziness.  2003 was my senior year and we were heading to PCB for spring break but we made sure to schedule our flights based on timing of the Cincinnati game in which MU won the C-USA title for the first time ever.  It's an 11AM game for cripes sake, take a 6PM flight out of Mitchell good and sauced when you hit the bar after an MU win before catching your cab.

And the team sucks isn't a valid point, when plans had to be booked MU was in contention for a conference run.

And now get off my damn grass

I never made any statement about TV and time effects attendance. If you are asking me, is does effects it! I know the Brewers draw less during the week than the weekends. I never said anything about it that it doesn't. I'm saying it shouldn't, even though it does because the MU game will end around 10'ish, just like a Brewers game.

Ah so that's what this is about I am blaming Buzz.  Are you his wife?  A relative?
Where in my original post did I blame Buzz for any of the reasons attendance has decreased?  I gave legitimate reasons why attendance hasn't been great this year IMO.  The main reason being TV, which your lovely article states as well.  So how am I wrong?  I'll hang up and listen.

This was the closest thing to "blaming Buzz" I said,"1.  The team not playing up to expectations obviously hurts. There are a lot of disgruntled fans with how Buzz has coached this team.   This board reflects that, even after wins."

You flew to PCB, weak. It's all about the road trip. 15 hours in a packed car sure was fun...

Not to any spring break destination this time of year. The airlines know that.

Earl Tatum

Somebody should start a subject on the death of MU Great TERRY RAND who passed away in Florida.
Was second all-time scorer. And bigger than some players we have today at 6-9, 230. Was from Green Bay.
Played in late 1950's. Was pretty talented. Successful career after basketball.

You keep saying end around 10ish like a Brewer game, what does that mean?  Neither team, Brewers or Marquette draw well during the school year on a weeknight.  It doesn't matter if you or I think it is "right" or "wrong," it is a fact.

Meaning I don't hear Brewers fan wine about going to games during the week, when they end around 10'ish. I hear MU wine when a game start at 8pm, saying it too late. The game will end around 10'ish. Those are fact! Correct?

Second, I think the Brewers have done well in the past during the week. There was many games in the summer, they were getting 30,000 plus. But, that's summer, kids are out of school and the Brewers were winning the NL Central.

Actually, Ann Arbor likely offers more evening activity than Milwaukee. Large college communities offer vibrant, diverse social and cultural opportunities.

Check those stats again. Milwaukee has one of the largest college students concentrations per capita in North America.

Universities/Colleges
Marquette-12,002
UWM-27,813
MATC-27,043
Alverno-2,815
MSOE-2,486
WI Lutheran-1,009
Mount Mary-1,209
Herzing-7,000
Cardinal Stritch-6,093

Total-87,470

That's a pretty large college community. Those are just the ones I can think of.

I don't think the MU fanbase views Georgetown as a "major rival."

Really? In conference, I would consider them a big rival. Please.

You don't hear them "whine" because you aren't on their message board discussing attendance.  Brewer fans "whine" by not taking their families to games on school nights....Correct?

I guess agree to disagree.  Then they should road trip instead of fly on Saturday.

The bottom line is they value/prioritize other things....that's their call, but then they can't be upset when we "value" their fandom at said level.

Apples and oranges....Brewers play 82 games at home of which at least a third are school nights.  If you don't go to a school night Brewer game there are plenty of other opportunities....not so much for MU.  MU tickets are more rare therefore should be more valued than a Brewer ticket.

Agreed, but for the average Milwaukeean, non-alumn, the Brewer ticket is more valued, unfortunately.

"I was talking about this last night with a friend of mine at the game.  Many factors are contributing to poor attendance this season.  Here is a couple we came up with:

1.  The team not playing up to expectations obviously hurts. There are a lot of disgruntled fans with how Buzz has coached this team.   This board reflects that, even after wins."

Yeah, I listed that in another post.  My intention was not to directly blame Buzz for attendance as it was a small part in a series of reasons.  The main reasons IMO were TV, game times, and the quality of the schedule.

The defensiveness of the Slurpers on this board is absolutely pathetic.

I'm a bat, I love my wine!  ;)

If you are saying they whine, I'll take your word. Schools nights are not in June, July and August, when they get at times over 30,000 plus.

Depending on what they count in the metro-Milwaukee population numbers, you could potentially include Parkside, UW-Washington County, etc.
