Brian Wardle and UW-Green Bay clinched the Horizon League regular season championship tonight by beating Valparaiso.  Great story for Wardle, who faced some unflattering allegations in the off-season.  He's really helped elevate their program in his 4th year.  They are 21-5 this season.

Wardle to DePaul!!

FWIW, Wardle has as many Chicago kids on UW-Green Bay than Oliver Purnell does on DePaul (5).  He's only 34, but he could offer a ton of youthful energy that the program is clearly lacking.

But until they replace their AD, DePaul is where head coach's careers go to die.

Relax. Gotta wait until at least year 5 to make any sort of evaluation. Respect the process.

How many people here thought he should be fired last year as a result of all the rumors and allegations floating around?

His career record coming into this year, 47-48.  He took over a team that went to the post season the year prior.  I'm not quite ready to anoint him yet, though I surely hope he continues to do well.

Wardle is having a classic jump ship for another program year. Not gonna be a BCS conference (my apologies for the terminology) but maybe find a nice A10 or CUSA program to coach. Maybe something like a Dusquense. Ferry certainly hasn't done anything for them in two years.

I think it will be very interesting how things go for him.  He could have easily been canned last year based on the allegations, but the university didn't do that.  Some would argue they stood by him.  Does he owe them something?

On the other side, will some schools steer clear because of the allegations?

It's not like a Rice situation where there was substantial damning evidence out there.  If I recall correctly, the whole issue turned into much ado about nothing.

I am sure that the schools will go through an extensive vetting process and make their own judgment. Schools are hungry for an up-and-comer coach and he doesn't show that many red flags. I don't expect the interest levels to suffer too much based on what transpired this past summer.
Assume what I say should be in teal if it doesn't pass the smell test for you.

He was "largely cleared", but not completely.  A discplinary letter was placed in his personnel file and he was assigned an "adviser" to help him manage how he motivated players.  Don't get me wrong, I think most of the complaints were absurd, but also can't help but think it will make some schools take pause, especially so quickly on the heels of the investigation.

"At least one player had accused Wardle of using vulgar and obscene language, and a second player told officials Wardle forced him to work out until the player lost control of his bowels and then ridiculed him."

Not sure which is more shameful - crying about the language or shi tting yourself. Either way I keep it to myself. But what's truly reprehensible is that the two players had their mothers go public with the complaints.

I've been on training runs so intense guys are puking without breaking stride but we take pride in meeting the test and not letting your buddies down. To me that is the essence of team work.

How long would Lombardi last today?

Check out Coach K's record his first 3 years at Duke. He might not have made it to Year 4 in today's Win Or Else environment.

I have my doubts that DePaul would hire a coach with a Marquette background.

Oh believe me, I know it well.  One of the examples I often gave about waiting 5 years to FULLY evaluate a coach.  Many many examples like this...and to be fair, many examples of coaches that had very good records the first 3 even 4 years and then the other way it goes.  Mike Deane is an example.

This is why I'll always wait 5 years to fully judge.  I hope Brian does extremely well.  My guess is some, because of where we are as a nation in a PC world, will have some hesitations not to jump to him....his first 3 year record and the issues of last year.  Becomes a risky hire from a timing perspective.  If he continues a few more years, puts some time between last year between him, his options likely improve.  IMO

Lombardi would be just fine today.

TheTulsaWarrior

Wardle's behavior has been reviewed in depth more than 99.5% of division one coaches.  He was cleared of all allegations except for usings some swear words.  I challenge all posters who have used swear words at work to stop posting immediately.  :o

The team chemistry this season proves that all GB needed with Wardle is to let some bad apples leave the program and take their helicopter parents with them.  The corps of players stood behind Wardle.  Dick Bennett stepped up and helped Wardle.  The record this season vindicates Wardle and underlines the level of BS he received with two players who had serious maturity and emotional issues.

Ironically I think the BS thrown Wardle's way made him a better coach and brought the team together.

Yes, but there must be a diverse representation and each person must receive a participation award.

Tell me about it. I look at the guys in my classes and at bars and my dates and they are bunch of hairy wet cats. All 'Sensitive'. I know I could beat the crap out of half of them. And that is even giving up the first punch advantage that I have being a girl. Don't even get me started on their pc politics. I really can't wait to graduate and get back home south.

There's a big difference between military requirements and a coach not letting you go to the bathroom.
