How do you defend against Doug McDermott?  Creighton's next highest scorer is a drop in 15 ppg from McDermott.  Start Steve Taylor over Jamil?  I can see Jamil getting some quick fouls and becoming a non-factor for the game.  Play a zone?  Go defensive minded with Otule or offensive mined with Davante?  Maybe our best defense against McDermott is to run all our offense to him.  Pound the ball with Jamil, Davante, Steve, Chris and Deonte repeatedly till he has to sit.

I think the defensive line up will start and Juan will be guarding McDermott man-to-man.

You don't need to fundamentally change what you do.  Creighton is a good team no doubt, but let's not make them out to be unbeatable.  Buzz has faced, and beaten, better teams since he has been here.

4everwarriors

Yeah but, their strength is our weakness.

And vice versa.  Creighton isn't a lock down defensive team by any means.  Marquette will score.

I just don't think you sit back and let them do what they do.  I think you apply the zone pressure to take time off the clock, get up in their face, and make them run their stuff.  If that doesn't work, you can do something to change it up, but I just think you have to play the game that you are built to play.

CTWarrior

Need to play aggressive man to man with as little help as possible.  Switch multiple guys on McDermott to give him a lot of different looks.

Hobbes:  What's misunderstood about you?
Calvin:  Nobody thinks I'm a genius.

We have nobody capable of guarding McBuckets, because he can score in or out. Start Juan on him because he can waste 3 fouls on him in the first 5 minutes. Then let Burton come in and mug him for a while. Then switch around a bit with Jake, Mayo and Jamil taking turns on him. None of these will be able to handle him.

Buzz should tell Burton: You want to play big minutes in this game? Your job is to stop McBuckets, and as long as you are doing that reasonably well, you are my guy." Hell it's worth a try.
I thought you were dead. Willie lives rent free in Reekers mind. Rick Pitino: "You can either complain or adapt."

Put Jimmy Butler in Juan's jersey   ;)

yes, limit the help defense.  Clogging the middle just gives CU more open looks from 3.

What could you possibly have seen this season to indicate it is worth a try? It would be a one man layup line.

If MU is able to hold him reasonably in check, it will likely be because Jamil Wilson played a very good game defensively. I don't necessarily think that's going to happen, but I thinks it's the most likely 'if' scenario.

GooooMarquette

Juan is our best shot.  Tell him to squeeze inside of McD's jersey, and not come out.

Jamil is the only other guy we have who has the length and ability to slow McD down, so I'd rotate him there when Juan goes to the bench.

Galway Eagle

What if we just don't guard him? He's bound to get tired and thrown off a little bit!

TAMU, Knower of Ball

I think you guard McBuckets by trapping their PG. They operate out of the half court. If you put pressure on them as they bring the ball up, they can't set up their offense. It may disrupt them...

Of course, if the press gets broken, someone will probably be open for a three.

I do know, Newsie is right on you knowing ball.

MUMBA

I've heard Buzz use the phrase "play them high on the floor", which basically means getting them to initiate their offense closer to half court than the three point line.  It gets their offense out of rhythm and leaves them less shot clock to work through their offensive paces.  I think we have the defenders and the depth to make it work.  Think back to what Derrick Wilson did to Jordan Taylor, or what Jimmy Butler did to Tu Holloway.  The ball was forced from their hands early and far from the basket.  The player receiving the pass was in space where he was no threat to shoot.  The opponent offense was out of rhythm from the start of the possession.  I'd love some redemption for Derrick Wilson in a tough defensive performance.

Also worth noting from a defensive strategy standpoint... a few big east opponents conceded McDermott will score his points by guarding him w/o doubles.  They instead tried to deny Wragge.  St. John's had Jakar Sampson on him McDermott.  Doug went for 30 plus, Wragge did little.  SJU took the game to the wire when the inexplicably let Doug McD loose for a last second three.

Cause weve had so much success pressing this year...Just let Derrick do his thing and hopefully its enough to where Dougie doesnt get as many touches as he normally does. I think its all about limiting his touches rather then just hoping to guard him with the ball.

He didn't say press...he said pressure.  Pressuring their PG and making him waste time and getting the ball out of his hands, without necessarily shooting for a turnover, is a Buzz staple.

I agree that Burton is not an ace defensively. What I have seen is a guy who is not afraid to mix it up. If you give him the assignment that his minutes depend on him guarding the guy well, it is worth a try. And he likely has the strength to guard him. And if he can't guard him, only use him to spot others. Juan sure as hell does not have the strength to guard the guy.

And Ja. Wilson, with his softness and ole' defense?. Surely, you are joking.

Since McDermott seems to hate physical contact I would try to knock him down a few times early. Juan would be good for some wasted fouls and try to knock him off his game or out of the game
