Untucked - Danny Pudi's film

I'm not sure if anyone else made it down to Campus last night to see the screening of Dan Pudi's film Untucked, but it was awesome.

A great short film (that made it to Sundance!) that was produced for ESPN's 30 for 30 series. It did a great job of chronicling Al McGuire's rise at Marquette, the tradition of the 70s teams being a bunch of misfits, and how that storyline intersected with a young man named Bo. A young man that grew up in Englewood and wanted nothing more than to excel at basketball while getting a degree in Fashion Design.

The movie itself was excellent, but the panel afterwards with a moderated discussion with Danny and Bo was out of this world. It was heartfelt and funny, and the moderator was well prepared and well spoken (though a tad starstruck). The Q&A session with the audience after the moderated discussion was equally as interesting, with Danny recounting how much work it was to put together a short film like this taking it from idea to a flowing narrative. And with Bo telling his recollections of turning the tide against UNC in the 1977 championship game, his views on the short-shorts back in the day and giving a lighthearted story about a young man that punched a horse.

All in all it was a fantastic evening. Capped off with great chance-meetings with other passionate alumni at the campus bars, and Avalancheros]The Avalancheros + Bo Ellis rolling around the campus bars after the show.

The Avalancheros are performing on campus tonight if you're in town and can manage to stay downtown until 9pm.

 It's 15 minutes long. They said it will be released in March, iirc.

For those that know the Warriors from the 70's, like most on this board, the film doesn't reveal much that we didn't already know:
Bo was the first male student at Mount Mary, Bo liked to sketch, Bo designed the untucked uniforms, etc.  It provides some insight into the way Al treated the players:  let them have the freedom to express themselves, gave Bo the green light to enroll in classes at Mount Mary, and a few other nuggets.

For those that don't know the story, it will make for an interesting view during March Madness.

A few observations:  I was a freshman Bo's senior year, and we know each other in a passing sort of way over the years.  Last night he looked, and sounded, tired.  He showed us his hands, and they are really gnarly:  don't know if it's from dislocated/jammed fingers playing hoops, or just plain old degenerative arthritis.  He was, however, very charming, and gracious.

Someone asked him if any current teams match up to the "renegade" teams that Al coached.  He paused, and said something along the lines of "no current teams, but the Huggins teams in the 90's at Cincinnati" reminded him of the Al/MU style, which prompted the Art Long tale that Skatastrophy linked to. 

'Topper, you should have been there.  I don't think every seat was filled.  I saw a lot of familiar faces, but was also impressed with the number of current students that attended.  Probably to see Pudi, who is pretty entertaining.

If you do go to see the The Avalancheros, I wouldn't really recommend it. They're funny, but a lot of the time they were straining for a laugh. Too many "boner" jokes. Funny at first, but dreading it after the 15th time. They also invited the MU Improv Group Studio 13 Refugees, who were just absolutely horrible. I'm sure it will be better this time around. Pudi is a nice, down to earth guy.

I always liked Bo. On campus he and J were the epitome of cool. I remember the interview he gave on Sunday before the Final. When asked how he was preparing for the game Bo replied he was going to surround himself with "ladies." This flustered the interviewer who was stammering until Bo smiled and explained his mother, aunts, and sisters were there in Atlanta to cheer him on and they were pampering him that evening. Classic McGuire era Warrior lore.
