The Sultan of Silly

A conference of only 10 teams gets 14 of the top 100 which ties the Big 10 that has 14 teams. Also did better as an aggregate than the Big 12 and PAC 12. The ACC did best and SEC always does very well mostly thanks to Kentucky and their corrupt 1 & done program.

The next obvious choice for conference expansion is VCU with 3 top 100 players and if they  were part of us now we'd have 17 of the top 100.

Of course the board boobs hate programs that are public (even though they will never add a football program this late in the game) and have large enrollments and an obvious market for our conference and much prefer private schools only even if they have no basketball history or potential (see Richmond).

Shaka Smart is a keeper and if Buzz ever left MU I'm pretty sure he would be our next coach. I'm told he doesn't want to go to a blue blood program, didn't like the AD at U of I and since he is from Madison he is a near perfect replacement for Buzz.

Of course even though Buzz inexplicably blew this season I still like him and want him to stay at MU a very long time and hope Shaka stays at VCU and becomes a part of the conference and continues to build a strong program there that makes another Final 4 run.

Good stuff on the recruiting end.

Cannot see your end on Shaka though, he's got better options. Also, it's been widely rumored that Shaka passed in the Illini because of Champaign.

Never thought I would agree with a Sultan of Silly post, but +1 to you sir

VCU is trending way up. We should jump on them now

I have no problem with publics per se, but what makes you think it is too "late in the game" to add football?  Public universities similar in size to VCU, such as Old Dominion and Charlotte, have added football within the past year.  Both of those schools are going to be in the CUSA, which means they are in theory eligible for top level bowls.

All it takes is new leadership with new priorities.  And due to their size and resource base, it is much easier for a public school to add football than a private school.

If we were to add VCU as the 11th team, who would be the ideal 12th team?

I would think St. Louis would be invited but who knows.

Because Old Dominion and Charlotte did not add football. They upgraded their FCS teams to FBS teams.

VCU has NO FOOTBALL WHATSOEVER. The amount of scratch it takes to add football is in the hundred millions. And you can' jump from nothing to FBS. At very least it would take decades. But I seriously doubt that it ever happens.

Not to be nit picky but the SEC does well because of Florida and Kentucky.  You can't just brush aside a team that is essentially half of the SEC (with Kentucky being the other half)

No way vcu gets in. Gtown would never allow it.

I've heard GTown is the biggest stumbling block to VCU but don't understand why.  DC and Richmond markets are as separate as Milwaukee and Chicago.  Is it just the public-private thing, or are they afraid of some nearby competition?  Have they been vocally opposed to Richmond?

It'd be interesting to know what the other schools' ADs think of VCU (i.e. Whether the public school thing is really an issue).

I think it's because GTWN and VCU mostly have the same recruiting area.

I can't speak for other ADs, or even our current one, but Larry Williams was very high on VCU.

Old Dominion played its first game in FCS in 2008.  Charlotte in either 2012 or 2013.  They most definitely recently added football from scratch.
