Re-watched the game this morning. At the 8:46 to go mark in the second half Jake misses a three pointer.  Boos are easily audible and are fairly loud.  ASsume they were for the miss unless something else was happening on the court that I could not see on the replay.  Not acceptable if they were for Jake.  If you're gonna' boo our team please stay home and boo at your tv.

+1

This isn't Philly.  You don't boo your guys, especially when they are kids trying their best.

Hopefully this doesn't affect Jake and make him more hesitant to shoot than he already is.

robmufan

From up in my section, I was pretty sure there was some booing for play on the court, not the refs.

Golden Avalanche

It's strange how there is such varied opinions on whether or not there was booing in the building last night. People really must have been paying attention to the riveting action on the court not to notice!

Regardless, whatever happened last night was likely nowhere close to the vitriol directed at Scott Merritt or Dominic James or Vander Blue through the last decade. This fanbase is as guilty as any other for turning on their own.

I think the boos were directed an Buzz.  Watching on TV, the boos were clearly audible after one of Jake's missed threes.  I was waiting for the announcer to say something about it.

And I would venture to guess that the fans were doing it were frustrated that he was in the game.  At that point, he had played a lot of minutes in the 2nd half after playing very little during Marquette's run in the first.  Early in the 2nd half, he missed two 3s in about a minute of game time sandwiched around an "And 1" foul on him on defense during a Providence run.  I know, watching from home, I continually questioned why he was out there during the run.  Bad fouls on defense away from the ball and wasn't hitting his shot on offense.  The boos were probably frustration boiling over at Buzz for sticking with a player that was so obviously not helping, with perceived better options sitting on the bench.  With the backdrop of many fans believing this season was wasted due to that very reason, I was not very surprised some were booing.

Think they were booing the continued site of seeing Jake out there 28 minutes...after his unproductive Villanova game...and probably Todd being on the bench.  (Not just the simple fact he missed a 3.)

No one disputes the kids are trying their hardest - where the frustration lies is with the decision of how Buzz is allocating minutes.

Bingo.

Norm

I listened to the game on the radio and did not hear any booing come through the audio feed, nor do I remember Homer of Mac commenting on any booing.

It was pretty obvious on the television audio.

Really frustrating to hear boos when a guy simply misses a good shot. I could not believe that...

I was there. The boos WERE directed at the team & Thomas for their garbage offense that began and ended with Thomas/DW entered the game at 17:00 - 11:00 (or something around there).

Why? Because Thomas contributes nothing compared to the time he's on the court. If he can't hit open threes, he's worthless out there. The booing was a culmination in the frustration w/fans throughout our section (upper deck, behind the basket) was that Buzz finally had an athletic lineup in there to start the game/second half. We were running fine. Up 19. They were doing good. Then for whatever reason he subs our guards and boom....wheels come off.

THAT'S why they were booing. Not condoning booing at our guys, but...that's why. And I can't say it wasn't warranted. People not happy w/whatever Buzz was doing. It's like he couldn't help himself.

My quote to my buddy after he missed that three was "Even Scott Merritt's sitting at home right now saying "man...that guys sucks."

Merritt dealt with wayyyyy more than Jake. Jake gets treated w/kid gloves compared to Merritt.

BenCat12

The booing I heard was almost exclusively from the student section and it was after Jake missed that three.  The booing lasted about three seconds.  From what I heard people were booing Buzz for playing Jake, or booing Jake to send a message to buzz, either way it's the same thing.  It was pretty embarrassing.  While I don't believe the "they are just kids," line, booing looks terrible on a national broadcast....not the students best moment.

On a side note, there was also a "we want Dawson" chant starting in the upper deck of the student section, in the second half of the Villanova game.  It was quiet and short lived, but it was there.

Have never booed MU or any MU player. Never will. Don't really agree with any fans who do. Its dumb. And embarrassing.

But Buzz has bigger problems this year. He's using his post-game presser to call out the fans?

Archie

If Buzz was disappointed it should have been in the number of empty seats. Holy Cow! Watching on TV, over 50% of the sideline seats were empty for most of the first half.

I didn't really focus on the unfilled seats during the 2nd half so I don't know if during the first half they were no-shows or latecomers.

I was at the game and remember fans booing some calls/refs but not the team.

It wasn't the main speaking point of his presser. IIRC, he simply mentioned it.

Assuming you are right--not saying you are not--and those people were unhappy with Jake, are they pissed at him, or Buzz having him in there? Probably some of both. So now we will be going from Derrick being the whipping boy to Jake. And of course there are those who can't stand Ox, and some against Dawson, and then some against Derrick, etc. From here on out, it really should be Buzz that deserves praise/criticism.
I thought you were dead. Willie lives rent free in Reekers mind. Rick Pitino: "You can either complain or adapt."

21rooster

There was definitely booing.  In fact, it prompted a bet between me and the guy next to me...would Jake Thomas take another shot for the rest of the game.  After 8 and a half minutes of hoping for a shot, I'll be buying the beer next game.

At the opening tip the crowd was as small as I have ever seen it for a conference game, probably partly due to the 6p start.  The lower bowl filled in reasonably well as the first half progressed.  On the flip side, folks were streaming out with a minute or two left in the game once it seemed like victory was reasonably assured.  I also found that somewhat odd as it was not a late hour.

I agree, the praise/criticism should only be pinned on Buzz......I think the booing was directed at Buzz for playing Jake at that point.  From what I have heard from the students section this year, they are definitely in favor of a youth movement, to put it nicely.....

frozena pizza

I don't think anyone should have been booing.  Yeah, we had a really bad stretch there and Jake had a rough night.  But let's keep this in context - we beat a team that is ahead of us in the standings and came in on a five game winning streak that included comfortable wins over Georgetown, Creighton and Xavier.  The game was never really in question.

At the same time, I don't think Buzz should criticize the fans.  Maybe if they are being unruly or throwing things on the court but not for a brief smattering of boos.

I liked what buzz did with the lineup last night.  I wasnt there and I would not have boo'd if I was but Jake is over his head.  He had some really bad fouls where he simply was not athletic enough, wont drive, most of the time wont shoot, and shoots a bad percentage.  He basically provides nothing for MU.  Watching him and Derrick passing the ball back and forth knowing neither of them will attack or shoot can be frustrating.  As little as he provides I think some of those minutes could go to someone else.  Providences run coincided with Jake being on the floor during a stretch where he struggled immensly.
