Just listened to the Buzz Radio Show - Homer asked verbatim many of the questions Tower posed as well as others asked in that thread.

Highlights:

Steve Taylor:  Buzz went into detail about the injury...said he started him early in the season as more of a confidence booster than anything..even though he didn't really earn it.  Said Steve comes from great family, great coaching...but the injury has really been hard on Steve physically and emotionally.  Said Steve is really good against zones.

John Dawson:  Played with incredible poise.  Was really good.  Made a point that John, like some of the other great ones at MU under Buzz - came to MU with little fanfare - and for whatever reason, those guys have had the most success under "me" (Buzz.)  Mentioned Jimmy, Jae, DJO - all weren't highly regarded out of high school, or as acclaimed as other recruits Buzz signed.  Said John is hard working, no drama, wants to be coached, has a great work ethic.

Deonte:  Thinks he'll be really good.  Wants to see him be a better rebounder.  Needs to get better at knowing what's a good shot/bad shot...and time, score, possession with regard to his shots.  Still learning to play hard.

Does Todd ever smile?  Chuckle, No...that's not his demeanor, he's not a happy go lucky kind of personality...but don't take that the wrong way.  Homer interrupted a few times...said he got a smile out of Todd when saying he was the fashion police of the team - or the go to go for fashion.

General comments:  Dilemma - Our best defensive team, is our worst offensive team.  Buzz places higher emphasis on defense than offense, as far as doling out playing time - yet at some point there need to be results in the games from the guys getting big playing time.

Takeaways - Think we will see more Dawson...still not as much as I personally want - but get the feeling Dawson will get 15-20 moving forward.
"I'm not sure Cadougan would fix the problems on this team. I'm not even convinced he would be better for this team than DeWil is."

TAMU, Knower of Ball

Great recap Ners. I posted this in another thread. I'll add to what has already been said.

Listened to the show, Homer asked a bunch of these questions word for word. Definitely appreciate him being the messenger for all our questions.

From what I can remember (paraphrasing):

Where has Taylor been?
Taylor's knee was worse than I think any of us realized. The surgery was to correct a "hook" on his thighbone. Surgeon had to go through the knee. The leg atrophied during recovery. Tried playing him when wasn't 100% because he's good and wants to be out there. But could tell that he wasn't himself on the court. Wanted to play him at Butler but still didn't think he was recovered. Need him against Georgetown and he proved he was ready. We will see more of him in the future.

How about that John Dawsome?
Thought he played outstanding. Thinks his confidence is as much from ignorance as it is from skill. Doesn't care what the HS rankings were, Dawson is here because he can play, not because he's a throw on. Said that this performance will change the rotations but didn't say how. Was very committal about Steve but seemed wishy washy about Dawson. My interpretation is that he will play more, still doesn't get the start.

Why are we shooting more threes in the second half?
No one had the numbers so they couldn't prove if it was a true statement. Thinks we've been down and needed the threes to come back. Also noted that made threes would open up the paint

Is he in contact with the NBA players?
Says he texts the US players weekly. The european players he messages less often through twitter and other means. Sounds like he talks to Junior almost daily. Mentioned Vander Blue specifically. He said that he doesn't understand why people think it was a messy split. Still texts him weekly. Read Homer a text from Vander from yesterday. "Love you coach. Great win yesterday." Said he was proud of Vander. Gave credit to Wes for creating the Marquette toughness label.

What's the story on Duane's redshirt?
Could have played when he redshirted. Completely Duane's decision. Never commented on exactly how Duane felt about it, but said he still wants to be a part of the team. He dresses because he is still eligible to play. Could play him in an emergency situation. It also helps Duane feel like he is still a part of team. He has individual workouts 6 days a week in addition to practice. Works out before games and then participates in shootaround. Mentioned that there are before and after pictures of Duane from October til now. Says his body has undergone a "transformation." Sounds like very good news.

Do people push and shove Davante to try and distract him from the game?
Yep. Called Ayegba a "career fouler." Ecstatic that he's shooting 94% in conference play.

When's JJJ back?
Hasn't done full contact practice yet, but will be soon. Sounds optimistic. No set timetable.

What's up with Deonte's playing time?
When he's great, he's great. When he's not, he's terrible. Thinks he has the most talent of anyone on this team. Will be one of the greatest he's ever coached. Thinks he is currently getting by on talent, doesn't goes as hard as he should, 100% of the time. Particularly critiqued his rebounding. Doesn't go after it as quickly or as hard as he should be

Does Todd ever smile?
No. But is still a great team player.

That's all I remember. Of course all of that is paraphrasing.

Yes, and here's what he says to Junior:

"You know, Derrick should be starting over you on that Russian team you're on."
"It's not how white men fight." - Tucker Carlson

"Guard against the impostures of pretended patriotism." - George Washington

"In a time of deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act." - George Orwell

Great recap.  Sounds like positive news overall and always appreciate Buzz's candid comments on each guy.  Seems to be pretty spot-on.  Only unfortunate thing is Duane Wilson's injury.  Good poise for a young guy to choose redshirting.  Hope it works out for the best.

Marquette was 60-30 in the Big East the last 5 years, the best cumulative record over that span.

Let that sink in.    And some are arguing that he can't coach.   Sad.

Deonte isn't rebounding well.   Doesn't understand the difference between a good shot and a bad shot in context of game momentum, shot clock etc.   Homer said that he believes that any time Deonte has the ball, he believes that it is a good shot and that if he misses, he will just go get it and put in the rebound.   Buzz agreed and said that Deonte needs to learn that he can't just do that anymore and needs to go after every rebound on both ends.

.. when Tower posted his thread on questions for Homer .. I emailed him, told him the thread existed and hoped he could ask the questions on the show. .. 3 minutes after I emailed, Homer posted on Scoop that he was reading the thread.

Moral of the story is .. if we ask Homer, he (may) appear.

(Hmm .. and now to invite Buzz to answer questions on Scoop!)

Bo has lost three straight, so he also cannot coach.

Just to amplify. Better than Louisville and Rick Pitino. Better than Syracuse and Jim Boeheim. Better than UCONN and Jim Calhoun/Kevin Ollie. Better than Villanova and Jay Wright. Better than Pitt and Jamie Dixon. Better than West Virginia and Bob Huggins. Better than storied programs Cincinnati and S. Johns.

And on top of that he's a good man and great representative of the university we all love. Yeah, lots of reasons to bitch.

Not to mention how small the club is of schools that have gone at least to the Sweet 16 the last 3 years.   This year hasn't been up to snuff so far.  Frustrating.   But the season isn't over and Buzz knows what he is doing.

Sorry--Buzz never said the Redshirt on Wilson was completely Wilson's decision. I listened twice. More to this story than Buzz will tell.

Not to take away from Buzz, but I'll take a recent championship record over ours any day. Championships takes away the pain and gives amnesia.

Just listened.  All great.

I thought the most telling segment was the last minute where Buzz opened up to acknowledge that his kids are old enough to be aware of the public chatter.  I think that's an important point for a couple of reasons.

First, it reminds all of us that everyone associated with the program (players, coaches, families) can be impacted by the commentary.  Sure Buzz gets paid millions to 'take it'.  But he cares deeply about others who might be impacted.  So staying constructive is an important lesson.  Can't imagine if there was some board where my skills were critiqued every day.

Second, I'm sure he's smart enough to know that overall Marquette is a nurturing and caring environment.  I was in Indy this past weekend and the hyperbole has reached fever pitch about the job Crean is doing (or failing to do) at IU.  I simply can't imagine Buzz ever wanting to subject his family to a level of scrutiny associated with those handful of programs.  Just my 2 cents.

Buzz has been a relentless climber in his coaching career. To think he'd top off at Marquette seems incredibly naive, especially given how young he is. His family has adapted at every level whether it be community, junior college, middling high major, low major, or high major. The scrutiny at that level is not going to dissuade this family to the point of him turning down an opportunity.

Very cool that Homer asks questions posted here - just out of curiosity, does he preface the discussion by saying something like "these are the questions coming directly from the fans" ...?

Homer is a smart guy. Why spend hours trying to come up with your own questions when you can just pick the best that 50 fans come up with? And if Buzz gets pissed about a question, Hometown can honestly say, "I'm not asking, but your fan base is".

He's like Tom Sawyer - we can't wait to paint the fence for him and don't mind that he's the guy getting paid for it. A win/win situation for all.

Did he ask about a foreign trip nexg summer?  I think programs are allowed to go once every three years?  To my knowledge, Buzz has yet to take advantage of the perks of a month of organized team practice a trip gives him.

That topic wasn't broached, and the foreign summer trips are allowed once every 4 years. I can't recall Marquette's last trip, want to say there was something early in Buzz's tenure, but I might be off.
