Marquette: Better or worse on offense with Derrick Wilson?

It's easy to cheer for Derrick Wilson if you know him. The junior point guard is mature beyond his years, willing to speak with the media whenever asked, has a smile on his face around campus and has earned Buzz Williams' trust, something that doesn't come easily. He's the kid of a military man, loves [...]<img alt="" border="0" src="http://stats.wordpress.com/b.gif?host=painttouches.com&blog=28348875&post=10350&subd=painttouches&ref=&feed=1" width="1" height="1" />

Solid analysis. Any chance you'll be working on running defensive numbers for MU with and without Derrick?

NersEllenson

Would be interesting to see what the numbers on those categories were last year with Junior running the point.  Still, not gonna put much stock in what the offense does without Derrick, when he averages 32 minutes a game, and plays 80% of all available minutes.

Found this interesting from the article:  They've averaged 13.2 turnovers per game, and if you take out their six-turnover performance at Xavier that number jumps to 15 per game in the other four contests.

Gee who played their most minutes in the Xavier game?  Dawson.

The FreeThrow Rate stat is EXTREMELY telling - that's a huge disparity - from damn near worst in D1 with hoops with Derrick running the show to the top 15% in the country without Derrick.  Odd Buzz doesn't look at it this way, as he has ALWAYS been a huge proponent of MU needing to MAKE more FT's than the opposition takes.  This year, we are getting absolutely BLOWN out of the water in the FTA stat for the first time ever in Buzz's career.  Think Buzz all of a sudden changed philosophies as to what works for winning basketball?  Highly doubt it.  Buzz needs to bite the bullet, and permanently make Derrick the backup for the rest of the year, and play Dawson 25+.
"I'm not sure Cadougan would fix the problems on this team. I'm not even convinced he would be better for this team than DeWil is."

Not gonna put much stock in the numbers when they don't match your view.  No such worries when they do match your view, take the numbers and run with them.  Hysterical.

Awesome! I was just about the post the same thing.

Also worth mentioning...Last season MU averaged 21.6 FTA/game and opponents 17.4/game (+4.2). This team is averaging 23.4 FT/game and opponents 19.5 FT/game (+3.9).

In conference, MU has shot 100 FTs to the opponent's 92 and that includes quite a few late game opportunities in the 3 losses.

Uh NO.....when you have such a little sample size of what the alternative is - I'm not going to put a lot of stock in the merit of the argument.  I've never championed Jamil as being the PG option - always been Dawson.  Throw out Jamil's minutes of the 20% Derrick hasn't run....and it would look different.  NOnetheless, that is still far too small of sample size to evaluate Dawson on...which has been my point all along.

We've seen a ton of data on Derrick, and it aint good.  To argue otherwise is ridiculous.

I agree. Although, I would put some slight blame on the rest of the team missing what few open shots we have. I think the bigger takeaway needs to be that Buzz feels Derrick is the best (or only) option right now. And Buzz is only concerned with "right now." So, I guess, even if Derrick were the worst pg in MU history, it's obvious he's not going to be pulled anytime soon. So why the constant harping (or defending) of Derrick? (that goes for the entire board)

I have a feeling statistical analysis would support that an article showing our offense is less productive w/ DWil in would be 6 pages instead of only 6 posts at this point.

JamilJaeJamailJrJuan

One of Reggie Smith, Dj Newbill, or TJ Taylor would be pretty friggin' neat. But Derricks what we got.

I know it probably wouldn't go well, but since the Jamil PG experiment failed, I'd like to see Buzz give Todd a few minutes there. There is literally nothing to lose, and besides last game, Todd has been playing within himself, and at least the D will respect him which will open things up for Gardner and Jamil. Worth a shot.

I would take the Rick SLU program right now.
