Fr. Kelley

Random subject, but does anyone know much about this guy? How involved he is with Buzz and the players, practice, traveling, etc? What's his background, what else has he done at MU?

Also, I noticed at the game today he had a clipboard and was writing things down during the game. Is he involved in coaching or stats at any level? Just thought it was interesting.

A couple of years ago at a Tournament practice, Fr Kelley slipped and fell pretty badly, ultimately doing some damage to his shoulder.  Buzz said all the players who saw it stopped whatever drill they were doing and rushed to his aid.

Clearly a sign that the players have a deep respect for Father and were concerned about his well being.

Other than that, I have nothing....

He taught Theo 101 back in 1985 or 1986, my Freshman and Sophomore years.  I am pretty sure he was the Chaplin then, he seemed pretty cool. It is a good job being team Chaplin IMO.

Been the team Chaplin for 28 years now.  Taught at MU from 1961 to 2000 (when he retired)

Father Kelly baptized my son 15 years ago in Gesu.  I've been lucky to see him over they years in San Diego, San Jose and Anaheim (most recently in November).  The tournament in November I went up to him before the game with my son and introduced my son to him.  My wife took a picture of the three of us together. It was kind of neat to have the priest who baptized him meet him again 15 years later.

Because my seats were behind the MU bench, I was able to watch the comings and goings before and after the game.  Dwaine Streeter came up to Father Kelly and spoke for several minutes.  Lazar Hayward did the same.  There was another person, potentially a former player, that did the same.  Tony Miller was apparently in the building, but did not see him.  Other alumns \ friends of the program came up to Father Kelly prior to the game.  Definitely some love and admiration for this man.

When I saw the title of your post, I was worried something had happened to him....my heart skipped a beat.  He has definitely slowed down a bit, no question, but I'm hoping he can continue in this role as long as he is up for it.

Fr. Kelley is very involved with the players, and they love him. On the road, he goes to all team functions: walk throughs, meals, everything. Despite the age difference, he relates very well to the players. When Buzz took over, and he started prayers, it took him a while to realize that was Fr. Kelley's function. They now share that function.

Thanks for the background. This is kind of what I was hoping to hear... That he is involved and remembered by players, not just some dude in a collar at the end of the bench.

I had Fr. Kelly for "Atheism and Theism" in the late 80s.  I was surprised there was such a class, and further surprised by his objectivity in teaching it.

Had the same class.  The Jesuits know what they are doing-they are not afraid to be challenged.  Between that class and having read "The Last Temptation of Christ" at my Jesuit high school, I found my faith. 

Most of my theology classes at MU were very interesting (the exception being the "Foundations of Christian Marriage" or whatever it was called - it would have been more hines to call it "Catholic Doctrinal Justification for Prohibition in a Birth Control"):  Fr. Sheehan taught the intro honors they class with a textbook on liberation theology; "Jewish Thought and Practice" with Rabbi Silberg was not challenging, but he was another (like. Fr. Sheehan) charismatic prof.
