but there are still some definite gaping holes in his game.

This. But change some to numerous.

At halftime, I'm sure UNM's coach just told his team to stop doubling down with Jake's guy.  Boom, UNM's Jake problem solved.  Why are they able to do that?  Because we have this other guard who doesn't need to be guarded.  Double down with the other guy's man and leave him open for the kickout?  Yup, that'll work every time.  Why?  Because when he gets the kick out pass he will head back to the top of the key 25 feet from the basket and try to start the offense all over again.

I don't think Jake is the problem.

Hobbes:  What's misunderstood about you?
Calvin:  Nobody thinks I'm a genius.

I agree that Jake's man is not the problem.  But rarely if ever has Jake's guy doubled down on anyone  He is largely face guarded the entire game by everyone.

That is one of the things that opens drives for Wilson.  No help defense and his man (Wilson's) is usually guarding Oxtule.

Pretty hard to watch that game and single out Thomas as the guy to pick on as he was probably our best player.  Yes, there are definitely things he could do better, but that's pretty obviously true for everyone on this team.  At least Thomas can do one thing pretty well, which we desparately need.

I think the real problem this year is that MU has no one to hit the big shot when it matters.

A lot of that is because MU lacks both guys who can get their own shots and guys who can get good shots for others.  So we rely on a lot of ball movement to try and spring people and hope for the defense to miss a rotation.  It is a roster of very good but imperfect and somewhat mismatched players.
