Admittedly, I'm not acutely aware of MU's athletic history beyond basketball, but I have a hard time believing the athletic department has ever turned in a performance quite like this.

Men's Soccer: Big East Regular Season Champs, Big East Tournament Champs
Women's Soccer: Big East Regular Season Champs, Big East Tournament Champs
Volleyball: Big East Regular Season Champs, Big East Tournament Champs

That's nothing to say of the variety of individual accolades (volleyball, in particular, seems to have swept the conference with the Player of the Year, Coaching Staff of the Year, and Freshman of the Year).

Yes, I realize this could be Superbar-ed, but what a season...
The Flutie Effect: "A significant and positive correlation between a university having a successful team and higher quality of incoming freshmen, alumni donations, and graduation rates."

Also, Men's soccer with their first ever NCAA tournament win. They play tomorrow in the Sweet Sixteen against Virginia at noon central. Watch here: http://ulive.cbssports.com/index-ncaa-dev.html?media=422278

I appreciate the link! Thanks!

Fifth straight regular season title and second straight BE tournament title for WSOC.

First ever NCAA tournament win for MSOC, and first time with consecutive NCAA tournament appearances.

First title win for volleyball in any conference, and the tournament win gives them their third straight and third ever NCAA tournament appearance and likely clinches first and second round matches at the McGuire Center.

This is a good reminder to attend all three sports when you can.  It's always an entertaining event.  My favorite is volleyball in the Al against a quality opponent but I feel privileged to have attended the great Men's soccer win against UConn in 2012.  Check the schedule next fall and come out to cheer your Warriors once or twice.

UVA up 1-0 at half, but down to 10 men. Then Marq gives up an early goal in the 2nd half. Down 2-0. Wow. Gonna be a tough road back.

jesmu84

Boom. MU with the goal. 1-2. Good quick response. MU pushing numbers forward, which is good, but UVA likes to play on the counter, so should be an interesting last 35 minutes.

jesmu84

Just kidding. Next possession after MU's goal, MU gives up a PK. UVA converts. 1-3.

jesmu84

Blah. MU loses 1-3 on the road to UVA. Va had only 10 men for 89 minutes and still manages 3 goals.

Great season though. And the majority of our starters are young guys that will be back.

What Men's Soccer game is Crean handing over the outsized check to Fr Wild for the new stadium?

"And if you make my sandwich right I'll give you guys a big tip. I promise!"

Have you seen that commercial? It plays in Indy every once in a while. I notice that he fails to talk about faking an elbow to the face for some cheap FTs.

Women's volleyball got a rough draw for the NCAA tourney. They were 10th in RPI but didn't get one of the top 16 seeds which would have had them at home for the first two rounds. Instead they play Louisville (which kicked their butt in the big east final last year) in the first round with a possible match up against Illinois at Illinois in the second.

I didn't expect them to put together a long run this year, but wow, what a season with all those Freshmen. Hopefully they can still pull off an upset or two. Next year should be awesome.

And for some reason, certain people don't ever think Marquette can be elite.

Marquette CAN rise another level.

Recently talked to the parent of a nova WVB player.  In awe of the MU program.  Go Warriors.

Next year should be awesome.

All Mary Nilles has to do is be able to throw balls in front of Bailey, Barber, Niemann, and Gosh. And Bond has a Under Armour Honorable Mention All-American setter coming in next year, too.

Theyre recruiting class is incredible too. My sister who plays volleyball goes to the same high school as Taylor Louis and she is damn good. Its always nice to have a 6'2" middle who can jump out of the gym.

You guys haven't even talked about their best recruit yet either, Alyssa Goehner from Minnesota. National prep player of the year as a soph and junior. 5'10'' makes her a bit undersized at the pin but she hits nasty and has a 35 inch vert. Could be better than Autumn next year.

Marquette could run a 6-2 next year also depending on how the setting situation shakes out.

mujivitz06

Nele Barber has really been emerging late in the year as a dominant threat which might make things a bit complicated if Bond wants to put Alyssa and Autumn on the outsides. Gosh has been so valuable on the right side it's hard to see them moving her either. We'll see. What a problem to have. Incredible amount of talent when you consider that the freshman "phenom" of 2012-2013 Erin Lehman can't even crack this lineup anymore it's so good.

Well i'm just speculating that's it's possible. I wouldn't know if it actually will.

I should have said "could" and not "might". Edited.

It's an offensive alignment/scheme in volleyball.  In short, it means a team has two setters in the offense that set when they're in the back row.  By doing this, you ensure that you always have three eligible front-row hitters to attack.  In a 5-1 offense, there is only one setter and she sets no matter where she is in the rotation.  So, when she's in the front row, there are only two eligible attackers.  The "6-2 vs. 5-1" issue is one of the eternal debates in volleyball...if you're into that kind of thing.

This is correct...it's interesting in that the higher levels of volleyball you get anything but a 5-1 is rare...so it would be a different thing.

Wiki page explains it fairly well down in the formations area

you need more versatile players to use the 6-2 and you sometimes have to sacrifice on the defense but it provides you with more attack options.
