Teams that have IT, players that have IT, win.  This year we might win a few, maybe even more than our share, but until something shows me otherwise, we don't have IT this year.  And I was hoping for better. VB, a guy who at least flashed IT, coulda made it oh so different.  One of the dumbest moves in MU upper classmen history.

GoldenWarrior11

Sounds like we should be at DEFCON 5.  Or is it 1?  I always get those mixed up.

Confusing because the movies often get it wrong.  DEFCON 1 is the most severe, but movies often say we're going to DEFCON 5 and nuclear war is imminent...it's actually DEFCON 1 which is the oh crap moment.  5 is "normal readiness"

I agree with what you say here....so far. VB as you call him, would have made a difference for sure. That was a mistake on his part, but what are you going to do?

We'll see if they can find themselves on this trip.

We were saying the exact same thing this time last year.

Sounds like we should be at DEFCON 5.  Or is it 1?  I always get those mixed up.

DEFCON is used by the National Command Authority, JCS, and Unified and Specified Combatant Commanders for managing strategic assets to fight a nuclear conflict. Since the demise of the USSR DEFCON has lost much of its urgency. DEFCON 1 is the highest state of readiness for imminent strategic strike. DEFCON 5 is the default readiness position.

DEFCON is strategic and is not used at the Operational or Tactical levels of command. In aviation, the COCOM directs the JFACC to establish various states of readiness for air assets. Under Alert Alpha designated air assets must be able to be airborne within 5 minutes meaning crew dogs are sitting in the cockpit in full flight gear (a brutal proposition in places like Iraq and Saudi.) Under Alert Bravo designated air assets must be airborne within 15 minutes meaning crew dogs are in full flight but sitting in the ready room swilling coffee.

Movies often confuse Readiness Levels and real war fighters don't give a sh1t about DEFCON as that is for the multi-star generals to worry about.

In Big East terms DEFCON would be something Val Ackerman would manage, that is between runs to Office Depot and meeting with Kelly Temps.

don't ever under estimate the power of buzz...as most of you know, buzz was down and probably as close to "defcon 1" in his coaching career not too long ago. now he is one of the most sought after coqches in the country.  although this year may not measure up to his first 5, he will coach these guys back into the tournament.  along the way, we'll rake our lumps and continue to improve.  i know it hasn't been real pretty so far, but lots of debbie downers here.  repeat after me...the power of buzz 8-)

We better defer on this subject until our resident military analyst, Keefe chimes in. He also knows where all the good bars are. My experience dates back to the late 60's in such out of the way places as Hong Kong, Manila, Taipei, DaNang, Quang Tri, Wake, Okinawa, etc. So none of those places likely exist anymore.

Speaking of DefCons, which as the better movie: Dr. Strangelove or Fail Safe? Two very different takes on the same theme.

So its Vander Blue's fault MU is not as good as you would like them to be. Got it. Now if someone could give me the last 30 seconds of my life back, that'd be much appreciated.

Both are classics by two outstanding directors. Each underscores the absurdity of Mutual Assured Destruction but while Kubrick's political satire suggests an inevitable holocaust Lumet's work finds an ultimate redemption through our shared humanity. Another excellent book/movie of the genre is Seven Days in May.

Absurdity in MAD because you don't think it works, or absurdity that something so simple works?  Just curious.

I'll take Strangelove, but enjoyed both movies

How do teams have IT this early in the season

There are still some long-lived watering holes in Asia that may have our shared DNA. In Hong Kong I frequented two of the older Brit pubs in the Colony - the Bull and the Bear in Admiralty and The Blacksmith Arms in Tsim Sha Tsui. I usually did my drinking in Lan Kwai Fong but those bars would have come after the Vietnam era.

While not a bar, the best almost Mexican food in Asia Pacific was at Charlie's Tacos outside Gate 2 at Kadena Airbase. The place has been there since 1956. Guys have eaten more than 100 tacos in one sitting and written the feat on the walls inside. The record for years was 155 tacos eaten by a C 141 Loadmaster back in the 80's.

Agree. Fail Safe (and Seven Days in May) we're great, but Dr Strangelove is an absolute classic.

Well, MAD was absurd in many ways and on many levels but the reality is that it kept Ivan out of Western Europe. Damned expensive proposition, though. The brilliance of MAD is that it limits the end game to one unacceptable extreme.

The doctrine has been revisited recently due to the Kennedy shooting. I am convinced Khrushchev blinked over Cuba precisely because he could see Moscow in ruins. If the Bay of Pigs did anything it hardened Kennedy's resolve on Missiles in Cuba.

Coincidentally, I am reading an excellent book now that addresses Kennedy's analytics in both Cuban crises.  The President's Club by Nancy Gibbs and Michael Duffy looks at the role of former Presidents in executive decision making. A fascinating read that I recommend highly.

Can we add an IT guy to the academic support staff? The players would save a lot of time and be less worried if they had a reliable laptop and internet connection wherever they went.

This is the first thing that came to my mind upon reading the subject title.  "Really? Scoop needs IT assistance?"

"We don't have IT"

Said after UWGB & UF games last year.

Said after DePaul game in 2010.

Said after countless games in the 2011 season.

We. Are. Fine.

It's November. Only UW fans brag about November & regular season wins. The idea is to peak in March. History shows Buzz's teams tend to do so. Until it plays out otherwise, please refrain from writing the team's obituary. Wish I had that season checklist handy.
