I think if Buzz had to do it over again,he would have recruited a JC point guard for this year.Instead he took 2 freshman point guards.I know he is loyal to his players,in this case Derrick Wilson. In this business loyalty can get you fired.Obviously,Buzz is not going to get fired.Maybe in his mind Duane Wilson was good enough to be the starter from day one.Obviously Derrick Wilson has limitations. The limitations are really exposed when your 2 guard spot is shaky also.

I think Vander was going to see some time at the point early this year.    Oops.

Exactly.  I have no doubt that is why he was so upset about him leaving.

Something to note is that (correct me if I am wrong) this is the first year since Buzz started that we don't have a JUCO transfer on the team to begin the season.  It's going to be a learning experience for Buzz to work with some guys who were not stars in junior college.

I know we don't want to hate on Derrick, but he simply is not good enough to the be the 30-minute-per-game PG for a team with Sweet 16 (or beyond) aspirations.

Back when I used to see a lot of Illinois games, they had a kid named Chester Frazier. He would drive fans nuts because he wasn't very good but he played a lot of minutes. I always felt sorry for him because it wasn't his fault that he was the best PG the Illini had. It was the coaching staff's fault for not recruiting and/or developing somebody better.

Chester Frazier had a lot to offer a good NCAA team, as does Derrick Wilson.

Derrick offered it the last two years, as a 10-15 minute backup. That's what he is. It isn't his fault that he played 38 minutes today. It isn't his fault he bricked jump shots that were so wide open the nearest defender was at the MECCA. It wasn't even his fault that he missed his FTs. Because that's who Derrick Wilson is.

In 2+ years, he has not offered one shred of evidence to the contrary.

38 Minutes for Wilson and 30 Thomas today. They are bench players on any other top 25 team.... like am i the only person who sees this as mind boggling... This back court wouldn't start for Delaware State yet alone Marquette...

Boone

No, you're not the only person who's scratching his head at the amount of minutes Derrick and Jake played -- especially given the crappy rate of return. Maybe Dawson and JaJuan wouldn't have done any better, but why not give them some time? They certainly couldn't have played any worse.

tower912

Why play two freshman against the best defensive backcourt MU is likely to face this year if they aren't ready?

you are not the only one. Im boycotting every game unless JT and Derek hits the bench. FREE JOHN DAWSON AND JJJ!

All I can think of is Duane Wilson.  Derrick is what he is at this point, he's not going to get any better at shooting.  I think Duane will start by mid season once he is healthy and if he can knock down a three or 2 and limit turnovers. If we do not hit some outside shots our advantage down low with Ox and Otule is no longer an advantage.  Teams are going to dare us to make the three and have no reason to play up on Derrick.

There is no offense.  It was all one on one in this game in both halves.  I'm not sure what Buzz' offensive gameplan was.  Missed shots aside, our shots were forced late in the clock most possessions.

I can only imaging how Dawson and JJJ are feeling right now. They are 10 times better than De Wilson and JT..period!!

tower912

Duane wouldn't be starting.   3 weeks ago, Buzz said that DeWilson was starting at the point.  And he described in detail why and what Duane's shortcomings were at that point.    And that is before Duane was diagnosed.   Duane is not likely to be the answer this year.   Unless the question is about who is the most inaccurately judged player in the MU program.   He would not have been starting today.

In Buzz I DONT trust with freshmen.

tower912

Check Blue's minutes as a frosh.  And JMay's prior to his transfer.   And Reggie Smith's.   And DG's.  When Buzz thinks they give MU the best chance to win, they will play.

Well, that makes ONE of you.

JJJ and John Dawson: you can transfer I totally understand.

Boone

So, Derrick and Jake WERE ready to face the Ohio St. backcourt? Give me a break. We had nothing to lose by getting Dawson and Johnson some time.

+1 million

Derek was solid for the first 15 minutes.   Second foul for him, as well as Ox, Otule, and JWilson, what little flow there was disappeared.   Derek can't carry a team or take over a game.   If everyone else is standing around, then he stands around.    Maybe Dawson can take over a game 4-6 weeks from now.   Not today.   tOSU is not Grambling.

And we see where Buzz's declaration has led us. He will start Derrick all year, because Buzz said so.

Sweet 16, Sweet 16, Elite 8.   Big East Champs.   And when, exactly, has Buzz mischaracterized one of his teams?   He is always open about their flaws.   If he says Duane was behind Derek, it was because Duane wasn't as good as Derek.

JT cannot buy a hoop.  I've seen him play in person 5 or 6 times and I think he may have 1 or 2 buckets.  I've seen Frozena make more baskets than JT.

I'm sure Buzz and MU are really worried now.

Do you need a fainting couch too?
