Haunted Hoops scrimmage notes and highlights

While the usual take-every-observation-with–boulder-of-salt condition applies, these notes from the 2013 edition of Marquette’s Haunted Hoops scrimmage should be even more questioned than usual. Instead of having a straight 5-on-5 scrimmage, Buzz Williams decided to truly get something out of it and held a pseudo practice. Yes, it was in a full-court scrimmage setting, but […]<img alt="" border="0" src="http://stats.wordpress.com/b.gif?host=painttouches.com&blog=28348875&post=9069&subd=painttouches&ref=&feed=1" width="1" height="1" />

Thanks for the highlights.  I was surprised by the lack of 'scoop coverage for this tonight.

While perhaps not good for the audience, I'm OK with Buzz using this time more for teaching than a scrimmage.  Actually, I'm surprised if it's the first time he's done this ... knowing he doesn't like to waste time.

It was my first time to attend and I came away thoroughly impressed.  Kids had a great time.  The players circulated among the guests prior to dinner, sat and ate dinner among the guests and the food was great (thought it would be paper plates - nice china with great side offerings).  Buzz spoke for 18 minutes (he stated this at the start of his talk) and was excellent talking about new NCAA rules to allow earlier practices.  Plenty of seats close up to get a great view of the court.  In many aspects it felt like a scrimmage.  Yes, there was stoppage and game situation setups.  However, there was a flow to the practice where you were able to get a great up close look at the players.  I actually thought it was better than a true scrimmage.  JJJ will make an impact.  Awkward shot, yes, but the game seems to slow down for him (as it does for all the good ones).  He made one very nice drive through traffic down the middle of the lane where he took his time and saw multiple options before he laid it in.  Towards the end of the session, plenty of first row seats were available as families with small children had left.  After the scrimmage, the players and Buzz congregated in the practice gym and sat at tables.  The kids were able to get all the players to sign their picture on a huge poster (the golden eagles take flight poster).  Players were very personable and the kids were so excited.  It was a great evening.  The athletic office did a great job with the event.  If you haven't attended this event, I would highly recommend it.  I went with a friend also with kids.  We both commented how great it would be if we could just sit in the front row without having to track our young kids.

Very impressed with Juan Andersen.  Looked like a completely different player out there.

Burton looked very smooth and huge for a freshman. Johnson was impressive.

Wilson, Gardner, otule, Taylor, mayo, Andersen and the freshman - very, very talented at the 2-5 spots.

IF this team gets some solid PG play, it will be a very tough team to beat. And I say if, Derrick did not look the part last night at least.

And buzz's speech about the preseason and expectations was very interesting, even my non-basketball loving wife thoroughly enjoyed listening to buzz.

Target - 27 wins and Gardner passes Tatum and Ellis as the all time most wins in career.   I think that is a good goal  :D

Anyone know where Gardner is on the all time points board? Does he have a shot at making top 5

The Wiki knows all. But to answer your question, no.

Great recap...but this is key.  Du and Dee as a 1-2 punch is key to this season...that injury really hurts as together they are a strong tandem.

Very excited to see what Juan Anderson will bring this year (and next). I think he will start at the 2 or 3, or even the 4.
