McKay sheds light on decision to transfer from Marquette

Jameel McKay was expected to be part of Marquette's frontcourt in 2013 and take on an even larger role in 2014, but he made the decision to transfer last week based on what exactly that would have encompassed. "(It was) just disagreements on things, is as simple as I can put it," McKay told Paint [...]<img alt="" border="0" src="http://stats.wordpress.com/b.gif?host=painttouches.com&blog=28348875&post=9058&subd=painttouches&ref=&feed=1" width="1" height="1" />

Dude doesn't want to play center, and with his build that's probably not where he can be most effective.

But, didn't he know that when he agreed to come to MU?
If you think for one second that I am comparing the USA to China you have bumped your hard.

Best option would have been for him to redshirt this season and bulk up. My guess lack of playing time or being asked to redshirt played big role in the transfer.

I would be shocked if he didn't know the role they had planned for him.  This has got "outside advisors" written all over it, in my opinion.

Also...even if he was the 5 next year, I'm sure that Buzz would have changed the scheme so that he wouldn't be playing as much of a traditional 5 role on offense.  We've clearly succeeded in the past without a traditional center, and Buzz has shown that he'll adapt the offense to fit the personnel.

Too bad--think he could have been a great addition these too years.  Best of luck trying to find a place that better fits his desires.

That's fine for this year...but, next year.  MU is going to be small.

Small at the 5, not the 1-4.

I don't understand the decision at all.  I mean he redshirts anyway, right?

Don't get me wrong, best of luck to McKay, but I don't get it.

So is he still practicing with the team? Or is he a regular tall guy on campus now? Like can I not hold the elevator when I see him in johnston today?
Retire Terry Rand's jersey!

Let's see which one of his name-drops will take someone who will sit out the first semester before having 1.5 years of eligibility, hasn't played a minute at the D1 level and will have gone a year and a half since playing a college game, and needs to feel "comfortable" with what he thinks his role is after just a few practices.   ::)

I'd advise callin' him a hairy, wet cat and then runnin' like hell.

Man, when you put it that way, it seems like this might be a bad decision...   ::)

Good point. Also, he "heard from" those schools. That doesn't necessarily mean much. I heard from Michigan State as a HS football player (MSU was recruiting a teammate). Apparently, Nick Saban cooled on me though since 15 years later, I'm still awaiting the scholarship offer.

He is off the team, but you might want to hold the door just in case he changes his mind.

What ever happened to "making the best of a bad situation?"

How many of us had or have jobs that aren't the exact job we want or need?

Where would Marquette basketball have been in the past few years if Jimmy Butler, Lazar Hayward, Jae Crowder and to a degree Vander Blue all didn't agree to play out of position for the overall good of the team?
We Are Marquette

NavinRJohnson

The reasoning doesn't add up for me. If he spent any time watching MU the past several years - particularly the likes of Jamil Wilson, Crowder, Butler he would have nothing to fear. He was gonna get his (and the NBA guys would love it, BTW). Having heard that (limited) explanation, my personal opinion as a total outsider is that he was starting to fear/realize he just wasn't going to be good enough to play here. I could be wrong.

I like how you put "outside advisors" in quotes.  Very apropos.

Wow, I'm very concerned for Benny.  Being able to mimic Myron Medcalf's writing so closely implies an oncoming case of dementia.

Does he for sure have to sit out the first semester or does the NCAA's decision clearing Josh Smith to play for Georgetown open the door for him to get cleared to play for first semester?  Also, does anyone know if he can continue to practice with the team (assuming it would be mutually beneficial to both to let him practice)?

MuMark

at least he gave it 4 practices before deciding he didn't like his role......

Yeah, I wouldn't doubt that McKay is going to try to play first semester next year given the Smith decision.

And there is no way that Buzz is going to let Jameel practice with the team.  A quitter?  *I* have a better chance of practicing with them.
