I hope not.....I'm going to rely on "science" to disprove it.  Sort of.

Good post. Top athletes are what they are because they DON'T fold under pressure. Lebron James, Michael Jordan, Wayne, Gretzky who don't regress to normal are the exception not the rule.

But reading Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell would explain it a thousand times better than I.

I think the idea is fun, certainly to talk about in the bar or whatever.  Unfortunately it becomes a bit of a life of its own and folks tend to remember the bad stuff and not the good stuff or things that don't happen at all to a person, or team on the cover.  Human nature I suppose.

An article on the jinx and researchers reaction to it.

That is not my understanding of the SI jinx.  They elected a straw man.  It is not that the cover causes the poor performance.

To get on the cover, you have to do something extraordinary or have unrealistic expectations that are impossible to live up to.  Appearing on the cover means someone or something is over-hyped and cannot live up to those expectations.  Andrew Wiggins having this kind of expectation (complete with a reference to Wilt and Manning) almost guarantees he cannot live up to this hype.

Financial market players use TIME magazine the same way.  When Time puts a financial story on the cover (meaning the financial story was so important that they bumped a half naked Miley Cyrus from the cover) it means that trend or story has to be so extended to make the cover that the move is about over.

"Regression fallacy" is the nice way to explain it.... I usually term the phenomenon "Nancies who always whine about the bad things that happen but refuse to recognize positive achievements," or its short-version, "just another day on Scoop."

Wow, I'm very concerned for Benny.  Being able to mimic Myron Medcalf's writing so closely implies an oncoming case of dementia.

I tried to find, but couldn't a great cover of either TIME or Newsweek from about 2005 with the title "It's Not Over Yet!" and some cartoon guy squeezing his house with $$$ coming out of it, basically saying that the housing market increase was never going to end. I think the same magazine actually did almost the same thing a couple years ago.

Literally the high of the housing Frenzy (when it would have been an excellent time to sell a house)

June 14, 2005

Then after the bust (when it would have been an excellent time to buy a house)

As long as he's not put on the cover of a NFL video game, he'll be alright.

So since Louisville lost this week, does that count for the SI Jinx?

I would say so though The Jinx is usually associated with cover photo.

Romo was on the cover this week....all good

CTWarrior

The week before Romo, AJ McCarron was on the cover with "On The Brink Of A Third National Title" caption.  So score another for the jinx.
Calvin:  I'm a genius.  But I'm a misunderstood genius.
Hobbes:  What's misunderstood about you?
Calvin:  Nobody thinks I'm a genius.
