If they were truly a package deal wouldn't he have committed earlier?  And why would you let your friend dictate where you go to school?

I like the fact that Buzz and company have been down to visit him more than any other school.

I was...and I certainly didn't choose MU because my buddies were going there. That's like choosing a school because you like their mascot.

Hill will take official visits to Marquette on Oct. 11

That is midnight madness.  Great.  I seem to recall we have a pretty good track record with recruits that visit during MM.

I was wondering what it was about Missouri that had pretty much every guy at 247Sports pick Hill to go there.  He spoke pretty candidly in the video, didn't he?

I don't think anyone here is saying he would go to a certain school just because his friends were.  But it can definitely become a deciding factor when choosing between a couple that you have high interest in.

I valued myself—and my education—more. Also, I expected to make friends beyond high school.

How many 17 year olds think this way?

Clearly you were a 17-year-old wise beyond his years  ::)  My point was that kids, athletes or not, choose colleges for a variety of reasons and often it's not because of the value of the education.

Why? Because I placed a high value on an education that I knew I would have to pay for? Because I assumed I'd be making new friends at the next stage of my life?

Wow, didn't realize I was so crazy. ::)

That doesn't mean you were crazy. It means that you weren't a typical 17-year-old. Oddly, you seem upset to learn that most 17-year-olds don't think like you did, especially present-day 17-year-olds...or maybe your avatar just makes you seem like a grumpy old man and it's skewing the interpretations of your posts.

We always hear about "package deals." When was the last time it actually happened?

When it happens, it's usually two brothers who decide to go to the same school (the Harrison brothers at Kentucky, for example). Deuce Bello and Quincy Miller were a package that went to Baylor. It happens once in a while.

It's not being crazy, I would say it's perhaps a misunderstanding of the current generation coupled with not at all understanding Hill's motivations.

This education that you would have to pay for he doesn't have to pay for, no matter where he goes. In addition, many of these kids know each other through AAU. It wouldn't surprise me at all if Hill is familiar with many of the underclassmen at all the schools involved with him, so he won't necessarily have to make many new friends regardless, but could very well want to play with someone like Gant that he knows well and has got along with well over the years.

But either way, I don't think all these kids view college the same way past generations did. For some, it's just an extension of high school. For some, a place to showcase their athletic talents on their way to playing professional ball. And many are undecided, so they aren't necessarily basing their destination on what programs a school offers. How many change their majors or transfer one or more times? And in those cases, it's easy to understand why staying with friends would be one of the factors a prospective student would consider.

Would you consider the experience of a good basketball school to be any kind of factor or is that dumb, too?

Also, why did you choose Marquette then? Surely you could've went to schools that had better academics? You can get a quality education at almost all the schools. If you were going to a far away school and felt uneasy about it, wouldn't it be smart to go with a friend to ease te transition and allow you better adapt being so far away?

I also find it funny that you are comparing your choice where you went to school for an education and had to pay for it compared to a kid going to school to play bball and doesn't have to pay for it.

At MU on the 11th or at Indiana on the 4th?
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

Quote from: muguru
No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.
