Just read on JS online Bucks are getting a new floor which is 'inspired" by the old Robert Indiana Mecca floor, could be interesting.  The hell with having a team someone wants to watch lets get a new floor.  I thank the Senator for keep the Bucks in town but they need new ownership.

i don't think there is anything that would make kohl more happy then to sell the bucks to someone who will keep them in milwaukee...he's been trying for years....and having the bucks in milwaukee has been a good thing for mu.

IMO, this isn't immediately obvious.  Why do you think so?

Brings in alumni in the NBA back on campus, where they interact with the team.

  • Lets us play in a NBA arena with all the presentation power that enables and allows beer to be sold at games.
  • Players can scrimmage against members of the Bucks.
  • As mentioned, more opportunity for former MU NBA alumni to visit campus, as Matthews, JFB, and Novak have all done recently.
  • Lets MU sell Milwaukee as a "basketball town".
  • Opens up opportunities for former MU players (such as Junior) to get a closer look from NBA scouts than he may get if we didn't have a local tie.
  • Allows us to sell 15,000+ seats per game on average.
  • Gives visiting recruits another local basketball entertainment option aside from the usual MU game -- I know recruits in recent years have attended Bucks games on their own dime while visiting Milwaukee.
.
I'm sure there are many other advantages, those are just a few that come to mind.

So. the Bucks announce a new floor design...and that somehow morphs into a slam against Herb Kohl. ::)

Anyway, I like what the Bucks are doing. They'll be awful this season...which is the plan because we all know the 2014 NBA draft will be loaded. They've also dropped all the pouting deadwood and replaced it with guys who actually want to be in Milwaukee.

Do they want to be in Milwaukee or are they just happy to have a paycheck...?   :o

We could serve beer at an on campus arena too. The Big East does not prohibit alcohol sales by their members for sporting events. The whole off campus arena thing is a myth. Case in point, the Carrier Dome is on campus and owned by the university yet serves alcohol.

Same with Cincinnati, I was at the game last year and they were serving beer. That stadium is a dump btw

Here's an article about beer sales at college basketball games.  The graphic lists some schools that sell beer (including St. Louis at their on-campus arena).

By their very nature/definition, shouldn't these "OT" threads be started/placed in the superbar? i'm just trying to understand the mindset of putting them here...

Are you insane? Butler may be the only person in the entire league who wants to play for the Bucks.

All good points.  I was thinking, sort of in the spirit of devil's advocate, that it could hurt MU, e.g., scheduling conflicts, not having the arena on campus, and perhaps most importantly, competing with NBA-talent for the entertainment portion Milwaukeeans' disposable income (Creighton, Lville, Zags, all have HUGE local followings and are in cities notably smaller than Milwaukee).  In other words, if we didn't have the Bucks, people who would otherwise go to Bucks games would instead come to MU games.

On the other hand, as you note, having an NBA squad/arena boosts recruiting, which boosts win count, which boosts MU attendance.

Ultimately it's an empirical question, but these points are good, especially the unhindered sale of alcohol, which I hadn't thought of.

No, I'm not insane. You're wrong. Brandon Knight seems very happy and Larry Sanders spends a lot of time in Milwaukee and just signed an extension. Also, John Henson doesn't seem to be in a hurry to get out of town.

And their teammates, when MU opens the doors for the road teams to use the McGuire Center as a practice facility.

My only worry about that is if Marquette would have to buy the BC outright. The Bucks are one of the main tenants, and there's really no replacement for them. Sure, it'd open up a lot of Saturday nights, but without the NBA money rolling into that place, would the BC have enough overall business to keep going? I imagine the Admirals, concerts, and WWE only get you so far.

Would we get a few more fans? It's possible, but I'm not sure it'd be enough for us to want the Bucks to leave town. I'm sure some crossover already, but it has surprised me in recent years that I feel college basketball and NBA really have different fan markets. Starved of the NBA, do we maybe pull in a new fanbase? It is possible, but the risk of what would happen to the BC coupled with all the positives we would lose, I'm not sure those extra ticket sales would be worth it.

Definitely an interesting devil's advocate, though. I hadn't thought of the additional fans or the other successful non-NBA markets at all.

GGGG

Just a quick look at 2013 attendance figures shows that of the top 50 schools in college attendance, only a handful or so shared a market with an NBA team.  (I know this isn't a perfect apples to apples comparison.)  And only three of those schools (Memphis, Marquette and Georgetown) shared an arena with an NBA team.

Does anyone else share an arena with a NBA team?

TAMU, Knower of Ball

Whether or not the Bucks leave, the BC needs a remodel, and not just the floor. One of the uglier NBA stadiums.
