The co-founder of one of the most high-profile grass roots basketball programs in the nation may have been running a disturbing side business.

Curtis Malone, president of the powerful DC Assault program, was arrested Friday and charged with conspiracy to distribute heroin, the Washington City Paper reported on Monday afternoon. Drug Enforcement Agency agents searched Malone's home as part of a year-long investigation and uncovered what's believed to be kilo of cocaine, 100 grams of suspected heroin, a handgun, and unnamed items associated with heroin sales.

Malone's arrest comes more than two decades after he was convicted for distributing crack-cocaine in 1991. He since had appeared to turn his life around through basketball, co-founding DC Assault in 1993 and turning it into one of the most prominent and successful youth development programs in the nation.

In the past two decades, DC Assault has produced nine McDonald's All-Americans and a handful of current NBA players including Michael Beasley, Jeff Green, Nolan Smith and Keith Bogans. Numerous college coaches also have cut their teeth working under Malone for the DC Assault including Morgan State coach Todd Bozeman and Maryland assistant Dalonte Hill.

Malone has not been as hands-on running the DC Assault program in recent years, but he still has played an active role. He is also the step-father of former Duke star and 2012 Portland Trail Blazers draft pick Nolan Smith, another DC Assault alumnus.

DEA agents working through an informant were able to make several heroin purchases from a dealer who worked with Malone, according to prosecutors. That enabled them to put a wiretap on Malone's phone.

After pulling over an alleged customer of Malone's who had visited Malone's Upper Marlboro home, officers discovered a kilo of suspected cocaine in the car.

DC Assault didn't respond to a request for comment.

Wow, I'm very concerned for Benny.  Being able to mimic Myron Medcalf's writing so closely implies an oncoming case of dementia.
