One of my best friends from high school is now writing for NBC Sports and just published a feature article on Marquette's culture and how it relates to NBA draft success etc. I'm a little biased, but I think it's worth a read:

Interesting perspective on how vital communication is to a community's success. The ability to convey needs and requirements clearly, crisply, completely, and precisely is crucial in Close Air Support where acutely lethal ordnance is dropped within 30 meters of friendly forces. In after action reports, mistakes are always attributable to poor communications. And often it is what is not said that is at fault than anything specifically transmitted.

Different tribes have different standards for communication. At PepsiCo, a Marketing-driven company, the intrinsic value of a presentation was often gauged by the number of slides in a deck. In that organization, volume suggested quality. At GE, an engineering-driven culture, one was limited to 6 slides. Concision and precision was expected.

The fact that Buzz Williams stresses communication as a foundational determinant in organizational success reinforces his reputation as an eccentric yet compelling leader. Crean motivated through emulation of celebrity. Buzz focuses on brick and mortar tools to deliver success. It is not at all difficult to understand why Buzz Williams' approach is the more effective.
