So the "Chico's DTV Backyard Beer Brawl" is no more? No wonder he has been MIA. This appears to be a downgraded holiday tournament, if I read this right.  How can Cal State-Fullerton play/host an exempt tournament at home?  Jay Bee or Chicos?

Weird that MU travels to Tempe on the way out, and then has a chance to play ASU again in this set-up. And also has the chance to play Creighton three to four times this upcoming season--the Wooden and then the BET to go with two home and homes.

My guess if MU didn't bail last year to go to Maui, that they would be trying hard to get out of this dog.

Coleman

Does this mean we could potentially play Creighton 3 times before we even get to conference tourney time? Have two teams ever played each other 4 times in one year?

The news from MU...

http://www.gomarquette.com/sports/m-baskbl/spec-rel/060413aaa.html

"The tournament was formed as two vibrant, nationally-recognized in-season collegiate basketball events join forces. The former John R. Wooden Classic will combine with the Anaheim Classic, the eight-team, three-day, 12-game bracketed event that has been staged the past six years in Anaheim."

I don't see any real changes here other than the venues (within single-digit miles of the Anaheim convention center, btw). I think the seven teams excl. Cal State-Fullerton were all named last calendar year, with one team to be named. Looks essentially like the same thing.

As for Cal State-Fullerton.. I don't see them having two games on their home court as an issue. There are tons of teams that play home games in exempt tournaments. The concept of "exempt tournaments" is a sham for lack of a better word.

Marquette played Colgate in Milwaukee last year "in" the Maui Invitational.

Yes, it's happened a few times.  Teams play twice in the regular season, once in the conference tournament, and once in the NCAA tournament.  I think it's happened with Wisconsin and Michigan St before.  I think also with a pair of ACC or Big 12 schools.

Seems it happens more than you'd think.

Five...

In the Wooden...twice in the regular season...once in the conference tournament...and once in the final four.

Thanks Jaybs.  That reminded about the home games.  I think Paradise Jam was the same way too.  Was remembering some rule back when the B&G Cllassic died- although the B&G never achieved exempt status. Maybe CSUF gets a pass as an exempt because not all the games are in their barn?

Agree, the field isn't too bad.  Would have been better if Larkin and Vander stayed. That said, this tournament merger sounds like a union of two dogs.  ESPN Regional TV?  Loved this spin too:

QuoteBig West Commissioner Dennis Farrell said that his conference "is proud and excited to be a part of what will undoubtedly be one of the premier early-season college basketball events in America. This tournament will bring quality teams from prestigious conferences to one of the top athletic facilities in the country and will become a "must-see" event on every Southern California sports fan's calendar. With ESPN networks airing all 12 games, this tournament will ensure that John Wooden's impact on college basketball will live on for years to come."

Naw; don't think there is any issue w/home games whatsoever. Requirements & restrictions for an exempt tournament don't include anything about location of games other than being in the US, PR, or Bahamas.

If you're a decent program it would be tough to get good teams to visit & financially would be difficult to rationalize.

Which looks like it would be the first time two teams have met five times in one season for the first time since 1971.

My assumption was that if we played 4 times before the NCAA tournament the committee would do everything in its power to prevent a fifth matchup. But yes the Final Four would be the obvious exception to that.

Who played each other 5 times in 1971? That's nuts, especially considering there weren't really many preseason tournaments or conference tournaments back then.

Oregon vs. Oregon St.

The west coast teams (especially those in the boonies, like Oregon!) seem to have done it the most. Not so much in the modern era, though.

Big East will dominate this tournament. Marquette and Creighton are the only two worth anything next year. San Diego State is way depleted and Miami got gutted by graduation. Arizona State brought in a joke of a recruiting class and lost half its starters. The other three are mid majors, CoC is sometimes good but they lost their best player to graduation last year.

I was just listening to the video preview that shows up on ESPN homepage for Marquette BBall and there is preview of the Wooden Classic. I may have just missed the boat on this, but the Wooden Classic first two rounds are now held at Cal State Fullerton.  So MU's first game of the tournament will be a true road game. Certainly should not change the outcome, but I guess I hadn't realized only the championship would be in Anaheim.

Yes. A "true road game" is debatable, however FOR PURPOSES OF CALCULATING THE RPI, I fully expect the NCAA to classify it as a road game as opposed to neutral. Nice bonus for MU.

Arizona State also has a guy that looks like a consensus first or second team All-American. I do not at all expect them to be a pushover.

Let's open up the recruiting pipeline from ASU using Lockett as the poster boy.

Although he has been out with a "stress reaction"...ASU's version of MU's Das Boot apparently.  That can linger and progress.

If you listen to the Scrambled Eggs podcast you would know this <ducks away from thrown objects>
