It sounds like a clothing brand because it is a trademark owned by an existing entity... Russell Brands, LLC owns the trademark AMERICAN ATHLETIC, INC. and there are other entities out there using some variety of this mark for other items (e.g., gymnastic and cheerleading equipment, shoes, etc.).  If they adopted a name without doing a trademark clearance that would be a major F-up.

Tums Festival

If you count Boston College and Miami, then seven ACC schools came from the Big East (once all the known reshuffling is done).

CUSA is becoming the AAC
The old Big East is becoming the ACC

It's the circle of life, not to be confused with a circle jerk.

Former Big East schools now or scheduled to be in the ACC:

Boston College
Miami (FL)
Virginia Tech
Louisville
Notre Dame
Pittsburgh
Syracuse

So glad we're off that roller coaster!

Better than the America 12 or whatever it was called before

And, might I add, for years ACC fans have stated that the Big East was overrated.  Too funny.

Coleman

Honestly, given the circumstances, American Athletic Conference is probably the best they could do. Its not a ridiculous number or geography that isn't represented by its teams. It doesn't scream mid-major. And it sounds better than Conference USA. Props to them for thinking of something decent.

We can poke fun at it all we want, but if we didn't get the Big East name, we'd have the AAC or something even worse.

Maybe they signed and EXCLUSIVE sportswear/apparel deal with the hottest name in the game - you guessed it - Russell Brands' subsidiary American Athletic.

Litehouse

Wow, I wonder if they even did a clearance search on the name.

Hey!  American Athletic is the same brand that made my jock strap!

While CAA teams join the A-10.  IMO everyone is moving up but no one's getting better (except Louisville and maybe TCU).

I'll take "Dukie V's Meeting In Coach K's Office" for $1,000, Alex.
