Because playing college basketball is exactly like training for war.

Unquestioned valor and iron discipline forged a nation

Simple citizens fought tyranny for liberty

An imperfect Union was cleansed with the blood of patriots

Common men rose to uncommon heights

And the tree of freedom continues to be watered with the blood, sweat and tears of young men and women who define nobility...

Sacrifices made so that...

Everyone can get a trophy

Everyone can feel special

And everyone is a winner

He would be horrified at what passes for values today

Yeah......but he doesn't use photos of Marines to get his point across. Buzz could learn a few things from Keefer.

This used to be a great country. The strongest steel is forged in the hottest fire and hardest anvil.

Really?  Comparing OCS to basketball is ridiculous.  One is a sport for entertainment.  One requires the trial by fire and mental strength to survive and succeed under the highest level of duress.  Coaches may like to say "going to war" and such, but to compare a Smokey to a Coach is dumb.  Apples and oranges.

Not a chance it takes that long. If the pres of the University has any stones, Rice and the AD are gone tomorrow.

Being the off-season and Rutgers basketball, I don't think it will last too long.

Let's not forget Fred Hill:

Beat me to it. I remember reading about this when it happened. Had to be one of the funniest and bizarre stories out of the Big EAst. Hill was in the stands screaming insults at the Pitt players and coaches. Made me think he was sick.

AD now back peddling.  Gov. Christie just blasted Rice and since Rutgers a state school, only a matter of time now.

The Rutger's fans already have their new coach lined up.  Ben Howland is #1 on wish list and sports talk.

would be a great option for them, and howland's probably in a place where he's looking to take another job and remain loyal.

Not saying this behavior is acceptable but I bet it happens from at least a dozen d-1 coaches. My hs football coach was like this minus the ball throwing. He lasted a long long time before getting let go and coaching somewhere else.

I don't think some of the grabbing is as bad as the video looks because you see coaches do that all the time to get players to hit a spot aggressively. That said if this is what was caught on tape, I could only imagine the locker room after a loss.

My high school football coach used to do all kinds of bat$hit stuff, but that was nearly 40 years ago. Not sure too many can get away with this now, with parents hovering and kids just not willing to take it anymore. No HS principal would put up with it, nor should a college president.

The days of the Bobby Knights of the coaching world choking kids just because they feel like it are over -- or at least they should be.

Amazing how media shifts human mindset on what right and wrong is as time goes by.

In 80 years raising your voice and yelling at refs and young adult athletes will be considered abuse, causing gasps of horror.

I may be a youngblood, but I'm pretty sure that the physical abuse of kids has always been pretty much frowned upon...

"physical abuse of kids"....that line is good, "think of the children!".   these are adults though.    I see teammates celebrating more rough house than that.

Ok fine: battery is also frowned upon (both for adults and children).  There is an intent portion there.  Those celebrations don't have that intent to harm... Rice's actions did.

Rice may be a real puss so I don't know but I'd hope he could do more damage if he wanted to harm other adults.

I'm not saying it's good or bad if you just look at the progression it's interesting.     Some kids aren't allowed to be given timeouts or detentions anymore because parents don't approve.  Interesting that's all.

Not being given timeouts or detentions is not equal to throwing balls at peoples heads, shoving people, screaming in their face that they are worthless pieces of crap, etc.  Look, the former may be the beginning or progression of the pussification of America, but the latter are just affronts to another's person.  We talk on this board about these "kids" (most of whom are from single parent homes that don't have strong or any male role models) and how proud we are of Buzz to gain the trust of both these student athletes and their parents; to see him serve in one of the roles that is most relied on in our society for protecting children: as an educator.  Rice completely abused that trust by acting in an inappropriate manner.

So rant all you want about how we need to stop giving out participation trophies and toughen up our parental discipline standards and tolerance.  That's not what I am talking about when I talk about the actions of "Coach" Rice.

Edit: Rice had an intent to harm. Whether or not he is a "puss" is irrelevant.  The "I hope he would do more damage if he tried" argument is just fucking stupid.  Domestic abusers could "cause more damage" too, but they usually prefer to not get caught, so they make sure it's hidden.  Your dick measuring contest of machismo on the progression of violence is getting out of hand.
