I know that Butler and Creighton lose the NCAA tournament win credits to their old conferences.......Are we sure that the C-7 members keep theirs?

Georgetown, MU, and 'nova could start out with a nice paycheck.

Let's double our paycheck against Butler.

brewcity77

We should remind Butler that if they lose, they'll get a bigger NCAA share when they join us next year. It's really in their best interest to throw this one.

Groin_pull

Thought I read the C7 schools will keep their credits. How much is that worth?

jsglow

You know, it's actually in Butler's self interest to lose Saturday's game.  I'll let you guys figure out why.

Sorry brew, I hadn't seen that.  And there's no need for teal.  I'd tell you a story from conversations yesterday but feel that I shouldn't.

To elaborate: The A-10 schools take a share of their own tourney credits prior to conference distribution, but I would have to think that upon leaving the conference the sharing goes away.  So any credits Butler, Creighton and Xavier earn this year inure entirely to the benefit of their former conferences, i.e. the schools get squat.

But the C-7 will be retaining their credits including the credits for this year, which will be paid to the Big East over the next six years.  Ipso facto, Butler - as a member of the Big East next year - benefits from MU winning the game tomorrow and earning the additional credit (potentially more).  If Butler wins, both teams lose financially, and only the A-10 benefits.

Wow, I'm very concerned for Benny.  Being able to mimic Myron Medcalf's writing so closely implies an oncoming case of dementia.

I touched on it here: http://www.muscoop.com/index.php?topic=36697.msg462446#msg462446

Based on how accurate the estimate of a single credit is (I used $250k, which I believe is a little generous), plus when payouts are made, I'd guess we're taking $10-15 million, not counting this year's haul.

IWB had a funny post on his board.
http://www.brewcityball.com/forums/showthread.php?3835-MU-vs-Davidson

Apparently Fr. Pilarz and the President of Butler shared a flight from the Big East announcement in NYC to Lexington for the games.  Pilarz suggested to Butler's pres. that they should let MU win for the good of the new conference, because MU gets to keep their NCAA credits and Butler does not.

Last I was hearing, 2012 shares were in the neighborhood of $250,000... so you're on track in that regard.  However, that's the figure for the last six years' credits the conference has earned... a credit that's earned in 2012 will pay out an estimated $260k next year and will top out around $300k in year six.  So every credit earned (i.e. every tourney game played) this year by Georgetown, Marquette and Villanova is worth about $1.7M to the Big East.

If MU goes to the Elite 8 (two games beyond Butler), that's an additional $3.4M to the Big East over six years... or (assuming equal distribution) $340,000 extra  in Butler's pocket.

So how much are those NIT credits worth that St. Johns and Providence are racking up?

NIT credits are $15,000-20,000 (approximately).

That's actually more than I thought.  At least they're contributing something. [cough, cough, DePaul and Seton Hall, cough, cough]

Okay, after reading this article I'm curious how the shares will break down in the new big east... if it's been discussed in another post I would appreciate a link, I couldn't find one. Thanks

Great article, and thanks for your info, Benny.

Why no payout for the championship game?

Does Butler get to bring their CBI credit from last year?

Eldon

"Williams said he has received a number of friendly text messages from his fellow athletic directors in the new conference -- particularly pleased with the potential to add NCAA tournament units. When asked if those units would stay with the new Big East or the old, Williams declined to answer."

-Andy Katz

Any reason LW is being secretive about this?  I thought all of this had already been worked out with old BE

Litehouse

Maybe the agreement is supposed to be kept confidential. It's one thing for an article to be written with anonymous sources, but completely different to have direct quotes from someone like LW.

TallTitan34

If they weren't being kept, other ADs would be sending MU thank you texts.
