After Vander Blue's game-winner against St. John's, there was some lively debate about which were the biggest shots in Marquette history.

Some thought Vander's had to be at or close to the very top because it delivered a conference title. Most thought Whitehead's shot was far-and-away the best because it came in the Final Four; some of those folks said any game-winner in the NCAAs had to be better than any regular-season or even conference-tourney shot because of the national importance and the one-and-done nature of the situation.

Anyway, after he beat Davidson, Vander was asked to compare the two shots.

His answer:

"Obviously, this shot meant a little more because it was in the NCAA tournament."

Vander is wrong...unless we get to the FF.

You hang banners for Conf titles.  We earned a Conf Title in perennially, the strongest conference of recent college basketball.  That will never be taken away from us.  If we lose to Butler, this is just a nice 1st round* win.

*Sorry, TC, I meant 2nd round, I know how excited you are that you got to the 2nd round.

This one was bigger because we were behind by one. If he misses, Mass is over and you can turn in your hymnals.

Yuuuuup. I'll take any tourney victory any day over regular season achievement/ accolades

Yes, shame on Vander for not feeling the same way some fans do about his game-winners!

We play 35+ games, I refuse to label a season based on 1 game.   Clinching a share of conference shows something.  No one can ever take away our conf championship.

Exactly.  There's no right or wrong answer to this one.  The bigger one is whichever one you think is the bigger one.  I loved 'em both.

The NCAA can, if there are violations.

I understand how you feel, Lens. But that share of the conference title would have seemed pretty hollow to me -- and, I'm guessing, Vander and his teammates -- if it's immediately followed by an NCAA-opening loss to a 14th seed. (Actually, immediately followed by the dud of a loss to ND in the BET, then what would have been an NCAA tourney loss. Ugh.)

What's bigger:

Walk off hr in game 162 with the game tied in the bottom of the 9th to win the division?

Walk off hr in the elimination game of the NLDS while trailing in the bottom of the 9th to stay alive and advance to the next playoff round?

If Blue doesn't hit that shot yesterday, we go home. Blue misses that shot in the garden two weeks ago and the regular season game goes to 2OT.

The shot against St. John's was cool and fun. But there should be absolutely no question as to which was the bigger shot.

How can you argue with the man that made both of the shots?

Gee whiz, isn't it nice that just for a moment Vander gets the spotlight 'cause, after all, I read somewhere that he is not very good at basketball.

I agree. A conference championship (especially when it's the greatest conference's ever final one) means more than a first round NCAA game. Difference, though, (and it's a big one) is that if Van misses against St Johns we might still win. Not yesterday.

I don't think you can tell a player his feelings are wrong.  When he gets together with his teammates in the future I think they will be talking about his game-winner vs. Davidson, not their share of the Big East and 1st game loss in the BE tourney.  He potentially sets us up for 3 straight Sweet 16s, that's something.

Yes you can, as pointed out it is a message board and you can say whatever crazy crap you want.  I just makes you a dufus.
